Maine

Last year, i had a snapper in my drive way. He/she was quite a distance from water.

Last night, i finally caught Rocky. He likes canned cat food. So, we get up this morning, and i asked hubby to look out the bedroom window and check the trap. He says "It's down by the old garden." Well, that's not where i put it, but sure enough, it was about 40' away from where it was last night, laying on it's side, and empty. HUH??? What on earth happened here??? So, when i checked it, i found that the 1/2" hardware cloth had been completely shredded at the back end where hubby had added to the length of it. Rocky, got caught, spent a while trying to dig his way out where the trap door was: there's a 3" deep trench at that location where the trap was originally set. Then, he rolled it across the lawn where he chewed it to shreds. If i'd looked out the window last night, when the cat was so interested in what was going on, i would have seen him, and he could have been dispatched.

Quick question, I am thinking about getting ducks, what breed are friendly and fairly "easy"? My kids have been dying for ducks and I think I'd like to get a few. Maybe 3-5? My other question is do I take care of them like my chickens, except of course adding a swimming pool for them.

What kind of ducks? (Meat,Egg,or as Pets?)

Ugh, just lost all but one chick to a fox this morning. He or she found a weak link in my chicken tractor after 4 weeks! ****. All I have is a wounded roo. Anyone know of any swaps that will have older pullets? Can't trust my tractor so they'll have to incorporate into my pen inside a pen system until they can be mingled.
There goes that breeding program for blue and black Ameraucanas.

Never easy losing them to a predator!!

It would be very awesomely helpful if those who have lost members of their flock to a predator if they also said how and when the bugger got into the coop...that way us newbies can learn from mistakes to coop designs. I have wrapped my outdoor enclosure from top to underneath to top...but now from my lurking posts I see that chicken wire is not strong enough...I wonder if it would be strong enough underneath?

I'm so worried about the littles.
Hi Heatherschix, My losses were not from directly in the coop but from free ranging. I used welded wire for the roof of my pen & as an apron. I got it at TSC for about $70 for the roll. They do have smaller rolls for less.

Why u ask are they days apart...well my 11yo snuck them in the bator while the polish were in the turners. Would have been easier to wait a couple days to do them all together but she was trying to sneak them in...just another factor to chicken math! Lol
Sounds like something my DD would do...and she's 19!!

I'll trade you for my surprise today... see below. Anyone in the Vassalboro area missing this freakshow? Come get him. I do not like.

Nice to see you SCG! I think he took one look at your great coop & run and said, "This looks like a good home!"

I might want one!
Sure, just let me know. I'm not trying to make money here, I had ordered females and got males--so whatever is a fair price to you is fine to me. Just looking to get some females to put in the pen with 1 drake, and trade/sell the other two.

I'd sell them, or trade them for females, or for some pullets if someone was interested. Open to suggestions and offers!

Just came across this thread and wanted to jump in and say Hi from Naples, Maine! Glad to see a lot of Mainahs on here. :)
Welcome. What you got??

Pets mostly. What do duck eggs taste like? Maybe even for breeding and selling as well, but if I breed and sell I want nice ducks.
I personally don't care for duck eggs due to the firmer texture. But, they're awesome for cooking. If i was going to have ducks, i'd do the Kahki (?sp) Campbell, or the newer sex linked ducks, but would probably choose the former. Both breeds are actually more prolific layers than chickens. If you breed and sell, i'd recommend that you choose only one breed, or keep them separate for breeding purposes. IMO, mix breed ducks, while nice, would not command the price or interest that pure bred ducks would.
