Any one on this thread ordered fruit trees through the mail? If so, what was the quality, what did you order, and what company?

My onions have been outside for about 2 weeks... not covered. Not in the ground but in their starter tray. Hopefully I'll get them transplanted tomorrow or Friday.

As far as fruit trees go, I got some heirloom apple trees a few years ago and boy they looked almost dead when they got here (they came with an explanation that they were in the dormant stage and would look dead) and I think it's been 3 or 4 years now and they've had little to no additional growth - sideways, spreadwise, heightwise. They are supposed to start fruiting within 4 to 5 years. They look small, scraggly and horrid. I gave one to the neighbor across the street and his looks the same. I would not buy from this company, again. It was Shumway. The two blueberry bushes I bought at the same time also died within the year.

I should have just flushed the money.

RainTree Nursery is the only one I've heard good things about, but FEDCO in Fairfield is THE place to go for Fruitrees... many mailorder places are just reselling their whips at inflated prices.

Thanks. I'll check out RainTree. I've used Fedco in past, but find that if you don't order in January, chances of getting what you want are pretty slim. I only recently decided I need a peach tree! Want some more Juneberries also, but that's not likely to happen. May settle for Honeyberries.

May be worth a visit to the tree sale, I had good luck there a couple years ago. If you strike out there then order. Only 2 weeks out at this point.

I like Juneberries. We got one a Fedco a few years back. It was slow to get established, but last year we got quite a few berries. Hoping to pick up another at the tree sale this year.

Perhaps I'll have to go... Maybe we can have BYC reunion there! I have one. It produced a few berries the year I got it. Nothing since. Only been in the ground 2 winters. Still real small. I would go for sure if I thought they'd have some June berry plants. I think I like them more than blueberries. They are not as astringent.

Try Agway in Winslow since you both are in central Maine.It's where I get all my Garden supplies. I'm Also supposed to get some Blue Spruce and Lilacs from the Arbor Day Foundation. I can give away some of those Spruces if your interested. My garden this year is going to be slim to none. Was looking to be fairly good in the new place even with the new baby. THen I got hit with close to a $700 dollar car repair bill to get my car inspection sticker and my wife's supervisor dropped something on her phone and broke the screen. I'm sure that was an accident. THe fact he and the only other person in the area know nothing now and the owner won't do anything mean's we had to refinance a loan in order to get her a new phone.
More than a little PO'd over that. Oh well I can only do me. I can't be honorable or nice for anyone else.
I have scored 2 separate sections of restaurant lobster pounds for my final coop for the chickens. Made of 3/4 inch Plywood with 2 X 6 sides coated in Fiberglass and painted for the floor. I also got 3/4 inch plywood for the walls along with a bunch of 2 X 4's Yeah they're all used but still great to do what I need for. I just have to pull nails. May grab more tomorrow just for a rainy day or another coop. As long as I can build it for free right now.

I'll probably hit the Tree sale on the Saturday and will grab Juneberries if I see them... I've had terrible luck starting blueberries from packs and refuse to pay what people ask for the Sod. Let me know if you can't make it and don't make other arrangements by then, then if I go and see some i'll grab extras for you.

The whole experience is pretty slick, something about tree shopping in a giant warehouse full of wet sawdust that's uniquely Maine. Might grab some impulse seeds that didn't go into my planned order.

Didn't see any trees at Campbell's last time I was there about 2 weeks ago, good to know they get them though as I don't stop by there often.

Campbell's has alway's worked well with me. I LOVE Cherokee Purple Tomato's since I'm part Cherokee and they are delicious. They always are good for grabbing some out early for me to plant before they get them out for the general public. Hint if you love rich tasty Tomato's you need to try those!
