Rats are horrible pest and so are mice. 10 or 11 years ago when I moved here I was living in a house that turned out to have both in the unoccupied downstairs apartment the Landlord(slumlord let us use since he couldn't find a renter.
At the time I had 4 ferrets and I placed them down there after the first time we cleaned up all the poop and it re-appeared. After that never had issues or sight or sound of rats or mice.
Matter of fact any time I have had a ferret never had any sign of a rat or mouse.
I have also seen where people are buying ferret poop to put into sachets to repel mice and rats. I asked someone who did that and they swore by it.
Course many people don't like ferrets either.

i saw a video on you tube that someone posted on here of a family that raises ferrets and trains them to hunt mice/rats

anyone have fruit trees?

my plums are doing amazing! its been probably 6 years since i have gotten any fruit off of it, though i dont know how it did produce- i only have one plum tree the other was lost in a tragic accident with a wayward weedwacking husband :he

and PEACHES, oh my gosh they are HUGE!!!! cant wait to eat them, maybe another week or so :drool

Do you spray your plums with something? We've never had fruit stay on there, - I don't know if it is plum curculio, or something else, but the fruit turns brown or black at a very young stage and drops off.

Our peach and apple trees are alive, but too young to produce. We get 200 pounds of pears every year, without working on it. Wish I liked them as much!

honestly it hasnt done anything for a few years so i gave up on it  i might next year though. i have noticed that japanese beetles LOVE my plum tree and destroy the leaves very quickly. i will need to do something about them next year
My plum tree i think i planted about 10 years ago and it was probably about a year or so when i bought it. I used to have two of them but, well yeah. It produces the tiniest super sweet plums, about the size of a golf ball!
My peach trees are probably only 6-8 years old and i bought them as little tiny starters from the local conservatory. I only have 3 of those trees and the desperately need to be pruned, they are in rough shape and VERY tall.

do deer like pears?? what do you do with them?
one of my friends told me that if i get enough peaches he'll make me something yummy with them. Not sure if he meant wine or brandy but either way i dont care!

Check out Fedco Tree's. If you order from them, be sure to place your order just as soon as the catalog comes out. My high bush have not produced for 3 years due to infection with witch's broom, and rust. I pruned them heavily. If the heavy pruning does not get rid of the witch's broom, I will have to destroy the plants. Alternate host for WB is Balsam Fir. You might also look into June Berries. I actually like the flavor of that fruit better. They are slow to establish, but should produce well once they are established. Not as picky about pH.

@DwayneNLiz deer don't bother our pears. I usually make pear butter, dry some, and freeze some in a cranberry/pear crisp recipe (plus fresh eating and cooking), and give some away. Lots go to waste.

@JDisme my favorite high bush blueberry varieties are Patriot and Blueray (bluejay is pretty good too). My friend has Coville which is also really good, but harder to find. I like varieties that aren't just sweet, but have a more complex flavor. Just make sure you acidify your soil and keep it weeded. Also, I recommend not just picking the blue fruit. Only take the berries that come off with not much resistance or have a little softness to them. Otherwise, they taste pretty sour.

My berry plants are only 2 - 4 feet tall, but they gave off a lot of fruit this year. @lazy gardener we had the witch's broom on two plants. One we pulled up, the other was a larger bush and we just cut off the affected part, and it went on to give off a lot of fruit this year. I consulted my friends with the 10 foot blueberry monster bushes, and they just cut their's off. Of course, if your plant is tiny and the whole thing has witch's broom, that might not be an option.
