Maine

Just thought that I would stop by and say HI in the Maine thread now that I've introduced myself in the newbie thread. My name is Marlene and I live in Southern Maine. This is my first winter with my chickens so it's a learning experience. A few of these cold stormy days have me asking myself if I am crazy to take on this chicken thing. So far so good except for nothing keeps water from freezing when it's this cold so I just keep bringing them water a few times a day. Anyway, hello! :frow

I can't wait for this cold snap to end! My chickens do not look very happy, especially the white leghorn that decided this was a good time to molt. We went away for 2 nights, so no one was here to pamper them (one neighbor replenished water on the middle day), but they are all still alive. Thursday night -30, Friday night -27. Last night was -24.9. I wonder if they will survive weeks of this?

We went away to a place that never got above zero (in Quebec). I discovered that you can actually cross-country ski in that weather with goggles, face mask, rabbit fur hat, and those chemical foot and hand warmers (although I required two hand warmers in each mitt!)

-21 F was our low Friday morning. Even I didn't want to go out and do the chores.

We butchered our pig yesterday, my feet have never been that cold for so long. But the meat will last us a little more than a year if we're careful about using it. The fat is in the crockpots now (4 of them) to be made into suet for the birds later this week.
