Maine

I am trying a bag of Green Mountain Organic feed and my egg production has dropped to four or so eggs a day (from 7 or 8). Anyone have this issue with GM feed?

Thanks

Are they free-range? My chickens are, and they have started getting really sneaky with hiding their eggs over the last couple of weeks. Spring fever? I now have 4 places around my house that I have to check a couple times a day, and I still think I'm missing a few somewhere.

They are free ranging late in the afternoon when I am out with them. We had a fox take one of them two Thursday's ago but production was fine after that until the feed switch. I was thinking maybe they might need time to get used to the food change? Could be stress related, I'm sure but the timing with the food was just too close to not consider it. Usually when they are out if one needs to lay they go back into the coop to do their business and then announce it in the doorway and go back to join the flock where ever they might be

Thanks for your thoughts

I will check around and see if I find any hiding spots.

We live just a bit south of there! Naples is a nice area.

We usually go there for 4th of July fireworks, which they shoot off over the lake.

Hi Cold Weather-

The eggs are my naturally dyed easter eggs.
For the blue: Blueberries
The orange: Carrots
Green: Basil and Broccoli
Ground the ingredients with food processor and then boiled down used the colored water with vinegar for coloring.

I will go and get a regular bag of their food and mix it together with the Green Mountain and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Double-0

Sometimes a feed switch can cause your birds to eat less for a short period of time, which could cause a temporary change in production. After a little while, they should get used to it, and return to business as usual. Typically though, the change in production would happen a week or two after the switch, instead of immediately.

A couple other things that come to mind- Which layer product are you using? I am curious if it is our "Course Layer", which is more of a novelty feed, than a production based feed. I have tons of customers that love that stuff, however, it is not made to produce like our "Layer Pellets" are.

Also, could you take a peek at the "best if used by" date on the tag. Every once in a while, we find that a feed store didnt rotate product properly, and ends up selling outdated product.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or concerns. I am here to help!! [email protected]

Please let me know how you make out!!
