^ Oooh! Oooh! I know who those people are - I bought three SLW pullets from them just last week. They have gazillions of birds. And now that all three of mine have been officially and unanimously pronounced female by the BYC, I'm extra happy about the whole thing.

The girls (Paris, Rome and Madrid

) were missing a bunch of feathers when I got them, but they're growing back beautifully. Otherwise, they seem very perky and healthy, and are even getting quite human-friendly.

We had a fox take a Barred Rock about a month ago. Her name was Peck and she was the leader of the flock. Since then they have been disorganized, wandering in small groups rather than staying together and generally just look confused. I am pretty sure they have given me the role of head chicken, however, I don't have enough time to be out free ranging and dirt bathing all day (as wonderful as that sounds). I am thinking about going out to the coop with some voting ballots and letting them peck the circle to vote in a new Head Honcho, maybe even some campaign signs...

Does it seem right that they haven't established a new pecking order in a months' time?

I lost my lead hens last year to a coyote, still disorganized this year

. I had 2 hens fighting yesterday, a momma hen and a regular hen, the roo didn't do anything, I had to break it up. My momma hen was just protecting her babies but wasn't doing well. I like my roo because he is so passive, but sometimes I think he is too passive..

Yay I have 4 new hens! I went to a family gathering yesterday (this being the reason I couldn't make the TSC swap) and it turns out my aunt who I haven't seen in years has about 30 chickens. She is reducing her flock and told me to take what ever I wanted. They are all about 1 1/2 years old and lay everyday. I took a Rhode Island Red, a Barred Rock, a Auracana and Maran. I will be excited to pull a few eggs out of the coop tomorrow.

I don't post very often although I read daily. I registered a while ago, like in 08, but am now more into raising my own chickens. I grew up on a large chicken farm(55,000 birds, all broilers) and guess never really lost the interest.

I now have 18 ladies in one barn, 2 roosters with them and a pet lady that has just hatched her first ever chicks. I will be moving her and babies up to her own pen later today. She made her nest down in the woods and have held my breath that nothing would get her or her babies. The babies are only a few days old.

I also enjoy incubating my eggs and have three incubators going with 18 guinea eggs, 6 peacock eggs and 49 chicken eggs. Also built an incubator out of a 55 gallon fish tank, but have not been able to stabilize the temp. I do not have a thermostat wired in yet so my son said he would do that for me. I hope to get it working right as I need to incubate some turkey eggs for a friend of mine.

Will also be raising 35 broilers as soon as we get the new barn built which we will be starting this week. will be raising quite a few chicks up to laying age and then will be selling in the spring. I have a mix of hens, some bard rocks, easter eggers, a few comets and then just barnyard mix, but they are all good layers.

We are in western Maine, in a small town outside of Auburn.
