Well, the eggs that were supposed to hatch last week didn't, and I don't have high expectations for the ones due this week.

I don't know what is going on. Maybe I should just get chicks instead of trying to hatch my own ....

Try not to get discouraged! Didn't you have 2 sets of eggs under 2 different broodies? I'll bet you get something, especially since they didn't have to ship.
Good luck!

Yes I do. I hope the rest hatch. Out of ten eggs, I am down to 5. They were all in great condition when I got them, so I'm wondering if it is the broodies. I guess we'll see. Thank you for the encouragement !

not all the roosters are getting it right in the cold weather so don't get discouraged, just try again closer to spring.

I'm so sorry! Did you egg-topsy and see how far along they were?

Good thing you have another broody due this week. Keep us posted.

My broody Maran is still at it and no more explosions (I just read that Marans can be annoyingly broody... this will be interesting as she isn't even a year old yet.) But we have a routine now: I take a bucket of luke-warm water out to the driveway, I take out a bowl of moistened pellets and bread, then I grab her off her eggs throw a warm towel down on top of the eggs, hold her at arms length in front of me and run through the house as fast as I can out to the driveway while my husband gets the doors for me. She eats, drinks, evacuates her bowels, and I get her back in with a minimum of fuss.

I'm still worried about how little she is drinking (hence the moistened food). Her comb is dry looking and a little pale and feels hot to the touch. Can a chicken die of broodiness? But she puffs all up and croons when I touch her. And I love watching how gentle she is when she looks under her belly and so carefully pushes the eggs back. Too cute.

(sorry my fonts are all messed up.)

Yes I did. Unfortunately I was smart enough to do it in my kitchen, so my house smelled like nasty rotten nastiness until the bleach and candle smells took over. The chick was fully formed, but didn't hatch. Fingers are crossed for the 5 that are due Friday
