12 inches is more then enough. if you do that, you won't have a animal dig under, it will be one of those weasels that get through anything.
hate the weasels.!!

Oh no! Sorry to hear about your hen :(
I'm in the beginning stages of blueprinting my coop. I was planning on burying the wire around 12 inches deep... Do you think that's enough based on your experience?

If no one minds my asking, how much do you sell your eggs for, eating eggs that is? I am very upset right now as there is a person in my town that takes every opportunity to belittle me because I sell my eggs for a $1 less than she does, she claims her eggs are all natural (organic) even though she feeds the exact same thing I do. I know this because we both buy our grain from a very good friend of mine. I know what it cost her for a bag of grain as we both get it at cost. I sell enough eggs a week to cover my grain and other expenses. I feel like I am the bad one for selling for less, she sells in a different market that warrents the higher price and I sell strictly to the locals here that want fresh eggs at a reasonable price. Am I wrong? I like to make a profit along with everyone else but I can't price myself out of selling eggs either. I have tried to ignore her and her comments but now she has taken it to another local site and bashed me on it. It is a good site and I really don't want to leave it but don't know what to do. An suggestions?

That's a hard one pollyc , if it was me I would continue to ignor the comments and just sell your eggs for what you want . Honestly some people make their walks in life soo full of DRAMA and try hard to Control and Bully others -- Don't let this person drag you down just ignor it they will go away eventually !! just my thoughts ~~~ Tammy

I recently found I'm too cheap on selling my eggs. in the grocery store, $3.00/ doz, regular brown eggs, not organic, or free range, just normal. I should be able to at least get what they get as mine are free range. remember, grain isn't cheap either.

I recently upped it from 2.00 to 2.50 because of the whole buying cartons thing. I haven't bought eggs at the store in awhile and I did check it out recently and HOLY COW even the store brand at most places is more than 2.50. The going rate around here seems to be 2.50 though...

thanks for answering people, the going rate around this small town is $1.50. I get $2 and have a hard time getting that but I do manage to sell enough to at least cover my grain. Luckily I have a very good friend who sells me the grain at her cost so I pay alot less. The other person also pays the same price as I do. I have offered to sell her my eggs for so she could make a buck on each dozen without doing any of the work. I guess I will just keep ignoring her for a while longer.

I am charging $3.00.

I used to teach with a guy who sold eggs for $1.00. He's a very generous person and often just gave the eggs as gifts. When I got chickens, I naturally wanted to charge $1.00 also, but a friend with chickens was visiting and suggested I'd be undermining people who work hard to cover their feed cost.

My steady customers get their eggs for $2.86. They give me $20, and I keep a record for them providing 7 dozen over time. I like that system best, less chasing around for $3.

I dont even get eggs! LOL!! I have lazy chickens, no one wants to lay anymore

...to be fair though I only have 3 hens- 2 older barred rock ladies who I am retty sure have reached their golden years, and an accidental bantam who I hope will start laying soon.

But today I am supposed to get my first eggs to hatch, AND there is a swap at the end of the month so I can hopefully add a couple there.....its going to be a good spring!

Did a head count in "The Chick Room" this morning:

25 chicks who are about 1- 2 months old, including White, Black and Blue Large Fowl Cochins, Black, Splash and Columbian Bantam Cochins and Porcelain & Mille Fleur d'Uccles.

Out in the barn, I have 50 birds - Bantam Cochins & d'Uccles.

That means I have 75 birds to tend to every day.

Oh..and then there's the incubator on my desk next to the computer - ready to fire up tomorrow for Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long with 48 eggs!

Funny how chicken folks who I've known in the past ask me, "Do you still have chickens?"

makes you wonder what is the price point that people will pay. I only sell to my co workers and they put the money on my account at work.
out of 3 people at work that have eggs for sale, one person tells me that my eggs (which she feeds to her parrots) are what her birds prefer. must be what mine get to eat.
