Maine

Just candled my eggs which I take off the turner tomorrow! I am very happy to say that out of the few I have in there (13) That only 1 didnt fully develop (started but never finished) I have 3 silver spangled hamburg pures, ancona mix, or silver phoenix mix eggs, then I have 9 green egg laying bantams! They are all developing and some of the bantams may start to hatch tomorrow. I am very excited! They are 18 days tomorrow, and with my small 42 egg Little giant incubator I have gotten such good hatch rates! I got my eggs from my own flock and a friend's so none were shipped or moved too much. I am so happy, I hope I get a good amount to hatch!

Ok, So i did pretty good at the swap today I came out basically even! but I came home with so much stuff which is what I was planning on! I got a really neat looking Silkie x cochin mix hen, a polish americauna mix pullet, an ancona cochin mix hen/pullet, 2 white leghorn pullet/hens, 4 partridge silkie chicks, 1 black langshang chick, 4 golden laced polish chicks, and a 2 hole laying box thing! oh and a breeding trio of bantam columbian wyandottes! I sold 2 red satin babies, 2 mini rex does, 1 duckling, 1 chicken, a guinea pig, 3 rabbit feeders, and I gave away 2 roosters, but I think that is it! i came home with a dutch bunny as well, they called me this morning and made arrangements to meet me, and almost gave her to the wrong person lol! I am so happy with today!!! I did soo good, I dont even have anything right now to sell on the 15th, I guess I will just have to go and look or possibly get some stuff from friends!

Eeep! So Excited!! We had our first chick hatch while we were having Easter dinner and there are a few more eggs in there making noise. Then RePete The Accidental Bantam laid her first egg today!! It is the cutest little egg I have ever seen. And now I know for sure she is a girl, so even more exciting!!!!

are you going to blow out the egg and save it? first eggs are usually small so they only get bigger from here on out.

either of the breda doing anything?

one has a pip finally! this has been the most excruciating day! we have heard chirping from the bator, seen some rocking eggs and waited and waited and waited! i was so happy to have the one little chick when we came back from dinner. shes a cutie :) i am really hoping that atleast one of the breda hatches. I did break the news to hubs that we would probably be running the incubator for a 3rd round because i want to buy some breda eggs from yoi. the more i read, the more i like!

Hoppy- that is a cute idea! maybe i could paint he date on it or something and it can become a christmas decoration or something. i wish i had some artistic talent in that respect, cause it would be great to do it up all pretty :) But i will be happy to get the date on it and a string....lol! i will have to look up instructions on how to do it tomorrow.

We are up to 4 hatched. Both the Breda hatched, one from a light green egg, and one from an olive-ish egg. The first was the green egg and she is splay-legged. I have done my best to make the bandaid splint and I hope it works. She is adorable! One of the breda's that hatched seems to have possible leg issues too- dragging it around rather than use it. but I wont know for sure until I can get her out of the bator...which may be a little while because everytime one dries out enough, another one starts hatching! The other Breda is full of it and is kicking eggs all over the bator! The last one, out of the olive-ish egg, is a really pretty dark chickie. I am anxious for the 3 that are in the incubator to dry enough so I can get them out and check on the bredas leg and move theem into the brooder to keeep my first hatched company.

Do you think that the leg stuff has something to do with hatching conditions? I havent noticed anything that seems weird to me with temps or humidity or anything. But its my first time, so nothing would seem really weird to me I guess.

I honestly don't know. None of my mutts have ever hatched with leg issues...as far as the Breda, I have one that doesn't seem to know how to eat, I have to hand feed and if it lives and is a pullet it won't go to the breeder pen. I have expressed my concern on the board about these rare breeds because there is a limited gene pool. I will be working on project colors in the Breda so that will relieve some of the inbreeding issues and expand the gene pool... I have noticed that position in the egg can play a role in leg issues, so I can't always pinpoint the cause. I do band my problem chicks so they don't go to be breeders, but the boys get culled and the girls go to the layer pen... I hope the babies will be ok..
