Maine

I am hoping that when I get home after softball tonight, that maybe I will hear some peeping! I am reeallly excited, it is the 21st day tomorrow and normally my incubator and time and temperature have been right on, and I can normally hear peeping and pip holes the night before, I really hope!!!

To all of you knowledgeable breeders, what is the difference between blue and self blue ? Colors and genetics still confuse me quite a bit. And Hoppy, would I still be able to get those cockerels ?

great news, the hen is up and moving about and at least toe touching even though her toes are totally curled up. relief for now.

I am so sorry Hoppy !

Hopefully you can hatch some of her eggs. Do you think her leg is broken ? Do you think that maybe in a week there would be any improvement ? Would some sort of splint work ?

blue and self blue
self blue is aka lavender and is recessive.
blue is generally referred to as blue/ black and splash because you can get all three colors. this blue is always laced.
and yes, how many cockerals do you want? i have lots.

Self blue breeds true, also known as lavender. Blue x blue will give you black, blue, and splash. Black x self blue gives you visual black carrying lavender., or black split to lavender. Blue should not be used with self blue because it will be difficult to distinguish the two when breeding the f2 generation.

Wow. I have a blue Marans/Wyandotte cross. She is very blue, no lacing. I want to breed her just to see what colors her babies will be. Klf73, would any of her chicks be blue like her ?

depends on what you breed her with:

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue . 25% Black , 25% Splash

Blue X Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash

Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Splash X Black = 100% Blue

Black X Black = 100% Black

Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

Ok. I'm thinking of breeding her w/ an Orpington. She is almost the size of one. She, like ALL of my chickens that have any Wyandotte in them, has been broody since November. It would be later in the year when I breed her, since my Orpington eggs are still in the incubator.

Hoppy, do you still have those cockerels ?
