Maine

your local feed store should have it. i've used flea spray for puppies. it is said that all birds will have mites at some point, you just need to treat them to keep them at bay. they get into the wood in the coop and the cracks. some are only on the birds at night and others are more of a problem to birds with big head puffs. I mix lyme or DE in my shavings.
Anyone know where I can find Sevin Dust around here? Or something else if it works better? I think the chicks may have mites. I'm not sure the best way to check for the bugs, but they've all been doing a good bit of head shaking lately. No other symptoms that I can tell and acting normal otherwise. Not sure where they could have come from, since they've never been outside?!? Unless it is from the shavings - which would REALLY blow, since I *just* opened that bag too.

Ok, thanks! I'll be mixing DE with the shavings once they go into the coop, but don't have any in the brooder. Once they're outside, the DE should keep them from getting them, yeah?

Flea spray - I can just get anything that they'd have at Hannaford or WalMart then? Spouse works right by a Hannaford, so that would be easiest if they have something there. How should I go about spraying it? Back, wings, under wings? They're 3 weeks old, if it makes a difference on what I can/can't use on them at this point.

the stuff for puppies and kittens is the safest. I do one drop (very small squirt) under one wing for really young birds although i have never treated them as young as yours. I'd get a name brand stuff, avoid hartz, causes lots of seizures in kittens and puppies. what if you just cleaned out the brooder and put DE under the substrate? I might wait as long as you can before actually treating them if they are that young.

I ran the incubator this hatch and the wife sat by and watched. She got tired of me telling her she was doing it wrong and told me to try it if I'm so smart. Her first 2 hatches were a flop, the next three were staggered hatches and those were a flop, her last 2 hatches she had 4 out of 12 hatch for both hatches. they were fine then once in lock down they died. My first hatch, going into it with everything I read here on BYC and 13 eggs I bought on eBay out of Georgia. Once in lock down, unlike the wifes method, I left them in there, didn't open it at all till day 23 when I removed the 8 chicks and the 5 dud eggs. I tried candling the eggs at day 14 but they were too dark (copper marans) so the 5 that didn't hatch I cracked open, turns out they weren't even fertile. I went from being stocked that my own first hatch was over 50% rate to a real hatch of 100%. LOL

I'll show off my little champagne silkie I hatched. I will at some point have one of these for sale as I can't keep them all.

first chick has hatched a day early. cute little barnyard mix from one of my aunts eggs. hopefully we get a couple of more and without the leg issues we had last hatch. still thinking i need a better thermometer than we have been using.

For the sevin dust, if that's what you want to use, check your local garden center or local big box store in the garden section.

Otherwise, your local farm supply or TSC will have ivermectin pour on (for cattle, not approved in chickens) that you can put some drops on the chickens skin every 10 days for a few cycles.

To prevent mites, I use DE and pyrethrin powder mixed with sand in their sandbox. They love it.
