Maine

Wow, busy thread today!

We just had 7 roosters processed by West Gardiner Beef today (AND, note this SCG!) none of them escaped! However, there was another customer with 4 roosters, and he only went home with 3. DH was chatting with him, and the guy could see his escaped rooster sitting on a wood pile across the road, and he had already found a friend (someone else's escapee)! :D

I guess they have a new policy now, that the customer must remove the birds from the cage and hand them over one at a time (I presume to avoid people placing blame for the escapees on the processors). Our new cage worked great, but we dropped $70 for it.

Now that's funny! I wonder how many roosters have escaped in Gardiner? Maybe we should write a childrens book about their adventures?

Isn't it illegal to have chickens in Gardiner?

Ha! I have no idea if it is legal. Someone should at least invest in a good chicken-catching net and hang out in the neighborhood. They could put food on the table year-round!

I'll help illustrate the book. :D

West Gardiner has got some seriously different zoning! I live in Farmingdale, which is the next town over, and it's like a free-for-all out here! Hallowell, on the other hand ( the other next town) which I am about a half mile from, has some strict zoning in the "in town" areas but it turns rural very fast, and when it does their are chickens and cows...and junked cars galore!

I'm still surprised that Vassalboro doesn't have building codes for PEOPLE HOUSES. You see some weird things in most towns... nice houses, followed by a junkyard, followed by a cowfield, followed by the middle school. The driving range here for Natanis Golf Course is right next to my friends cow pasture. That kind of stuff just doesn't fly in other areas of the US, but it's "par" for Maine.

Bucka... glad you volunteered for illustrating. I couldn't draw a stick figure if my life depended on it. For some reason I can draw molecules though. I have a very nice morphine and squalene. That's about all I remember how to draw from school. I'm pretty sure we couldn't (and shouldn't) incorporate those into the book.

Well, I don't know, what do they look like? Maybe faded into the background on the cover they'll look a little like chicken wire? (obviously, I know nothing about drawing these molecules :) )

I have some suspected cockerals if anyone is interested?
I have a black/gold hedemora like my avatar (that's dad)
Also a Breda cockeral, can't remember if he is black or blue.
Also think I have 2 Isbar cockerals one splash and can't remember if other is black or blue...

Anyone interested?

there were several for sale at the windsor show. I don't know who had them although I do know it was not the same person who's white leghorn won best in show. you might check at your local fairs or there is alway the central maine show- usually there are some bird for sale there.
Anyone know where I might find a decent white leghorn rooster? I am thinking of breeding white leghorns for spring chix.

So sorry you are going through this. It's tough. When we allow our broody hen to do her thing, it's always 50-50 boys to girls. The first time we had 6 boys to 4 girls. Couldn't keep 'em, all they're good for is eating the food and, well, you know. Our neighbor took them with his boys to the chop shop, returned 6 beautiful roasters, but i couldn't even eat them. We gave them away. You can maybe find someone in your hood who will process them for you in exchange for keeping a couple. Maybe just tell a little white lie to your son, that they ran away (hate to do that, but...). Personally, I can't do it myself, and I know I will be reprimanded here, but some people just can't. Don't be discouraged, you can always order from a hatchery to assure you will get all girls. It's fun hatching yourself, but you will ALWAYS get some boys. It's obvious you are a good chicken mom, and it is fun. Wish I could help you and take one or two, but right now we are overun with Pekins and can't get rid of them either. Good luck, hang in there.

I don't think anyone will reprimand you for saying some people can't do it. Some people can't. And that's okay. That's why there's people who take them off you, or people who do the deed for you for money. We did 4 today ourselves and BF had to say after the 4th one that that was all he could take.
