Sounds like a great idea! I can't believe people wouldn't understand that heavy animals + ground + lots of rain = mud. I mean, really?! It's not a yard full of astroturf!



On a different note, please tell me I'm not the only one ready to turn the heat on! A toasty 61F inside our house right now. *sigh*

People are that stupid. And unfortunately they tend to breed like rabbits to continue the ignorance.

I could dig out all the mud and replace it with a cement slab but then she would probably complain because the horses wouldn't be on natural footing. Or have a retractable roof put over the paddock so when it rains or snows or even gets too sunny then I could close it.

The sarcastic side of me wants to put up a sign that says
" Dirt + Rain= Mud. If you don't like it send a complaint to Mother Nature and stop wasting taxpayers hard earned money.
If you don't like the shelter than please leave a monetary donation.$5000-$8000 should be more than enough unless you also want
to provide cable and internet access for the horses. Then add another $1000. Otherwise mind your own GD business."

No you aren't the only one. My house was down to 57 by the time I got home from work today. So I fired up the pellet stove. Now the house is at 65 and is quite comfortable.

Since my furnace died three years ago the pellet stove has become my main source of heat. Even in the dead of winter I can keep the house at 60 with no problem. I do use a small space heater in the bedroom since I keep the door shut but otherwise the stove is all I have. On the plus side I only spend about $800 a year for the pellets compared to about $1600 if I was still relying on oil for the furnace.

Hmmm. I think the town charges a fee for putting up a sign. $10 or $25 or something like that. Don't want to break any laws after all.

We recently had a problem with hens who suddenly discovered all the space above their pen and flew up to the top of the 5 foot fence panel. After some thought, I priced some plastic "fence netting" at Lowes, ( I think, about $14) that was 50 feet long and 3 feet tall. I screwed extensions of 2'x3'ers, 8 feet long, to the fence panels so 3 feet extends above the original top. Then just stapled the plastic "fencing" to the extensions (it is very strong, UV stabilized and light weight.) it only took a couple of hours. Now they have to fly up 8 feet to get out and do not have a place to land at the top (I put the netting on the inside of the panels). They don't even try to fly out now.

I still haven't heard anything difinitive from UMO re what killed Betty the EE but her sister (Bea) and the cochin/wyndotte pullet (Big Bertha) who were acting OK but had loud and frequent tho intermittent rales are back in the flock and acting pretty normal, with just a rare rattle now and then from Bertha. Interestingly, the three hatch sisters, Betty, Bea and Rue (get the Golden Girls ref?) had been super tight, did everything togeather. After a few days in the house, Rue didn't recognize Bea and now chases her around in the pen, fluffing out her frathers and trying to chest bump her!

Well, I agree with SCG that you do want people to report concerns but I have to say that as much as there are people who try... people aren't the best creatures overall IMO and those who don't know their donkeys from their heads aren't the most helpful. Manage the situation. The ACO and horseman clearly were satisfied with the work you are doing. Now to manage the pr. If you state you are embarrassed then that conveys you have pride in what you do and are entitled to be embarrassed. Shame is something more people need and few people actually feel. (Is that a soap box under me??) The police will start to do your work for you with the neighbor if you 'manage' it right.
