Maine

Ash, I have some news you may find comforting!!! One of my 3 breda, all of whom I was convinced were hens, was caught trying to mount a couple of hens!! I may have a roo after all, which means I may have hatching eggs in the spring :) Though, I am still not truly convinced she's a he. Its a little harder to tell without a comb at all, but there is no difference in their tail feathers or waddle size.

Anyway, I would absolutely jump on the egg train too. Although I really need to get a couple more good quality LF Cochin hens and really truly verify the sex of all 3 bredas before I would have anything really cool to offer. Until then I would have some great mixes- cochin/sizzle, cochin/barred rock, cochin/breda.....

joanie maine has lf cochin, she shows and hers win.

The egg train sounds nice. Of course without a rooster I don't think any eggs my girls would lay would would be useful in a swap.

Lost power for about 36 hours. Lots and lots of mud. Good news is the horses' run-in shelter is still standing.

Thing didn't even move an inch. So take that idiot neighbor who thinks it isn't suitable. Of course the horses chose to stand outside the shelter with butts to the wind during the storm. But that was their choice. Otherwise no major damage here except the tarps over the chicken pen are toast. Lots of rips. But all things considered I will not complain. Tarps are easy to replace compared to the damage I've seen in NJ and NY and other places south of us.

Oh! I would love to purchase a few Breda hatching eggs! That is, assuming you have a rooster and a few to sell. I do have a hen that mates with another hen as a show of dominance, so hopefully you will hear some crowing. How old are your Bredas?

My lavender Ameraucana rooster is definitely a rooster, but I have not seen him mate with anyone. He is younger than the hens, I think he must be 6 months old now, and the hens won't let him push them around. I'm hoping he gets it together soon, because I'd like to hatch a few lavenders while I have them. They're really pretty birds, but I have so many breeds I want to try!

I have black ams and two lav hens and one splash hen... and I am tired of this rooster. So if you want to try out Cluckindales let me know! I also have two blues but they are too young to sex without venting and I am not.

I also have hen on hen dominance but I too am crossing my fingers regarding Anna's Breda cockerel. None will be what this girl was but... it would be nice to have a few in her honor.

The more I see my Orloffs as a small flock the more I like them. I am excited to breed this spring. The bator... should be in my future but who knows. Breeds I have and may try breeding: Dorking, Ams, R Orloffs, Polish Cap, Favorelles, meat crosses (Orp over Marans, and maybe Orp over Favs)

Breeds I want to raise: FCBM (I have hens but no cockerel since mr fox) and maybe a zipper bird. I like Dominiques but I also think Cuckoo Maranas or Orloffs might be nice.

Buckas Egg Express sounds like a fun in house swap-- like a tupperware party really. Stocks, like the one I made in Claremont NH, are outside. Bucka... IDK how I missed you either. Claremont wasn't as big as I thought it would be... a lot like a swap here but I loved that there were eggs from Greenfire... including Bredas :( and I went with a friend from Mass. She is very disappointed. Both of the Silkies she bought there were really good quaility (from catdance silkies) but they are both males! Maybe a super early bird special on eggs would be fun, especially so we can get out of the house and see each other and get eggs... then a stock later? I am huge planner but need time so almost a year is good.

Hoppy, your stained glass is beautiful!
Buckabucka and Ashandvine and anyone else I missed, an egg swap would be fun! Like one of those christmas cookie parties where you bring a few dozen cookies and everyone else does too, and everyone takes home a few of everyone elses cookies... what fun!
Of course that doesnt work with my attempt at narrowing my focus to a couple of rare breeds, but I do love variety and what a great way to get it!
We didn't have any unusually high winds, they were just all wild and blowing the rain sideways. Half my coop is screened in with a pvc roof (I call it the chicken solarium) and it never gets wet inside, but it is now!
The pigs are knee high in mud, their pasture is in the woods and the ground is just mush. I am really ready for some dry windy weather to dry things up!
And ash, Sorry about you losing your friend. Some of them are just something special. We had a Wheaten Marans roo who was like that, he died suddenly, and unexpectedly, and we were all floored by it. The kids did cry, and I wasnt far from it. My husband was helping me unload feed into the coop and he.was waiting for me to get eggs before we went out, and right out of the blue he says," I cant believe Leo died." Right there with you. So sorry for your loss.
Oh and thanks for the suggestion on where to find hedamoras, I cant remember who it was now, but thanks! I am looking into it!

Just saw that there is a possible Nor'easter headed this way next week.

Why can't we have at least a month of no nasty weather so things can dry up around here? And if it does happen that means yet another round of power outages. Anyone want to donate to my generator fund?

Ashandvine, I must have seen you at chickenstock (it was very small), but I didn't know who you were. I set up an EZ-up by the fence with a few metal sculptures for sale. It was not a real art show type crowd, but I did sell a monkey to the couple that sold me the lavender Ameraucanas. That allowed me to purchase one of those cool mobile fish sculptures. I wasn't so sure about the fish until we got it mounted on a pole, and then it became very entertaining. I have a 30 second video of it in action, but can't post it from my IPad.
I didn't even realize they had Greenfire eggs to raffle. I doubt I had even heard of a Breda at that point, so it probably didn't catch my attention.

I will be breeding the lavender Ameraucanas, olive eggers, and Basque (basic brown egg), but I will need new hens that lay white, and dark brown. I am way more fixated on having many different colors of eggs, than on any particular breed.

What do you mean, zipper bird?

And widget, are you talking a rain or snow Nor'easter? I am not ready...
