Major squatter!

Thanks. I haven't really seen her show a lot of interest in the nesting boxes so I'll check around the yard too to make sure she didn't find a good hiding place. I'm going home for lunch so I'll check then. Not many places to hide it unless she did it out in the open. The golf ball I put in there has writing on it. That doesn't matter, does it? It's still in the middle of the box where I put it so I don't think anyone has been in there moving it around.

Mine say Wonka/Top Flight on them; doesn't bother them a bit. I have a cam in mine so I got to watch the or behavior when they started to lay. They had zero interest on the nest box that was already installed when they moved in. It wasn't until about a week before laying that they would try it out and mess with it. They spend a lot of time looking into it... And on the first egg day she was in and out several times before depositing a perfect egg.

My nests have shavings in it, and a 3" lip. I press the bedding near the lip down to make it difficult for them to try to roll out the golf ball and bury it in the bedding.

WOOT WOOT!!! I went home for lunch and found my very first egg!!!!!

Only problem is I found it in the garden on top of a rubber maid bin. Silly hen! I'll post a new topic about how to correct that and announce the arrival of my first egg!!! It's HUGE!

Yippee!!!

My EE hen is 30 weeks and started squatting about 4 days ago. She just gave us a perfect little green egg this afternoon! She didn't do the egg song or anything before or after laying the egg.

Congrats! Several of my girls have started laying in non-nesting box areas.............on the ground, under the feeder, under the roost, etc. Within a week, they figure out the nesting boxes. Put a fake egg or golf ball in the box, and she'll get the picture.

Good to know that they got the hang of it. There is a golf ball in there. Would a fake egg be better? If so, where do I get one?

Hopefully she will get the hint soon. I have 2 nest boxes. I think I'll put on in the garden and then slowly move it close to the coop each day to help give her the hint. Maybe I'll see what she does this week though. I'll take the rubbermaid bin out and maybe she will then want to go back to the coop. It's only 50ft away.
