Make your own - No waste - 5 gallon (25# feed) bucket feeder for about $3

Anybody use these feeders for SMALL BREED BANTAMS? What size elbow would work for them?

I made one for silkies and I think I went 3", but use your own judgement on length, distance from bottom etc. I tried to make it so that they wouldn't try to put their heads under if it ran low and wasn't autofeeding well.

Thank you everyone for this thread and replies! My hubby made ours and it went out yesterday afternoon. Put some dried mealworms in the openings to get the ladie's attention. Fingers crossed!

Thank you for this great idea. I made a slight modification, here's what I cooked up. Took about 3 minutes for the chickens to get used to it. It's a compost bucket and a storm vent. There was a flap inside the vent which I removed, then I sawed a 100mm hole in the bucket and the vent fit into it snugly, no glue or screws needed.

This idea looks like it would work for my Bantam coop and run that is small, can you include a link to where you got the filter?

@kimthom66 won't do you any good outside the Nordic countries, but I suggest a trip to your local hardware store, this was sold as a storm vent for air ducts. You'll probably find something similar. You just need the shape, really, as the flap is only in the way. But the 90deg angle pieces work just as well, I've used both variants.

@kimthom66 I believe it would be a dryer vent here in the US....4 or 6".

My original one has worked great!

My only real complaint is that the lid is tough to get off. On top of that I thought it'd be nice to be able to put a whole 50# bag in at a time and a few more holes so the girls dont fight as much (I only have 5 now, but plan to expand). So hence today's project...

That is a great idea!!! I haven't made mine yet but plan to but the workers took the buckets I got for this lol so need to get new ones anyway. Plus I too like the idea of fitting a whole 50 pound bag in - always annoying getting most in and having a teeny bit left. Soooooo..... if you don't mind me asking, what bucket and what elbows did you use?? Thinking I might recreate that for mine if it's okay haha
