Makes Ya Think Twice Doesn't It

I think it is no secret Americans are fickle. Patriotism didn't take long to pass after 9/11. My family has lost 3 good friends in Iraq and know many that were injured, as well as a dear friend who was a pow. I don't expect fan fare for them or my husband who has served there and my Bro in law who is going back again, but I can understand the feeling of hurt the service members feel.

Hubby and I were watching PBS one night and they were talking about war and the service men. They were talking about the difference between America and Canada. Here in America we(media) like to keep it hush hush and not say a lot about it. Soliders come home and for a day we are like woo hoo then the next day its on to what Lindsey Lohen did that day.

We are iffy about showing patriotism, we are scared of what others might think if we do or say the wrong thing. When the soliders who have fallen come home, its real hush hush too. Media doesnt do anything about it, its not shown anywhere. Its not on the local news or photos. They gave a % of how many Americans were showing patriotism before 9/11 and then right when it happened. It was a big out cry for showing that you were proud to be an American. Flags were flying everywhere and everyone was talking about it. Then after that it has slowly trickled down again.

In Canada they were saying the people are proud about showing patriotism. They are all about it. When fallen soliders come home its a HUGE deal. Its all over the media, your local tv, its in the magazines and in all kinds of photos. People flock to the planes and other places just to be able to pay their respect. When you see the car going down the street that has the fallen solider in it people pull over and get out of their cars to be able to bow their heads, put their hands on their hearts and pray for that person and their faimly. It showed all kinds of footage of this and it was truley heart warming. It brought tears to my eyes to see how people would react when the plane landed and being carried away(car or otherwise.)

After that being said, please dont take any of that the wrong way. Im not saying America isnt proud, or that Canada is better. It was just a show on PBS that really got me to think about things and how its all portrade in the news and media. I have full respect of all of our soliders and proud to say that I am an American. If it werent for those brave men and women, we wouldnt have the world the live in today.
