I wouldn't mind more, but since these were only 6 weeks old, not the 8+ I thought they were, I'm not complaining.

Took a third bird, visually larger, from the same hatch. Brahma genes. 2.2# again.

Then the AC quit in the RV and the rest of my day was spent dealing with that. We had cooled down to just 100 degrees a little after 5pm...

Oh, another picture of the middle bird, whom i may eventually regret culling. Had some red in the breast. When i started removing feathers some had red bars at the base but just white and black bars at the tips. I didn't think that happened?

Chickens can be red with white barring. That cockerel was pure for gold.

He had red white and black on the same feathers! Like:
red black red black white black white black white black. On a single feather from quill to tip.

Did I make a mistake in culling him?

It depends on your goals.

Coloration of your cockerel (with barring)

Your cockerel (without barring)

Red (without barring)

Red (with barring)

All of these roosters are pure for the gold gene. Barring is dominant, so if you cull all the chickens you have with barring, it won’t show up again in your flock.

Also, here is a golden cuckoo marans, which has barring on a gold and black base:

Red with pencilling is my preference, so no, I didn't just stab myself with my culling blade.

Red with barring, or the cuckoo would be acceptable misses if I can't ultimately get when I want to be.

Ok. What is that green tie you are using to hang them? I have a few cord loops I use but they Always slip free. Yours looks like a very secure hold
