If its not intended for use until next year. I wouldn't worry to much about it. Bugs and weather do most of the work. If your chickens dig in it that helps too, I contstantly have to rake the surface of mine back into a pile. I dug my pit out about 2 feet tho so they don't ever get to the bottom.
 
My pit is dig in a foot. Does it need to be used right away.... I'm just learning and I wasn't gonna start gardening until this nest spring. I learned I had to leave it alone and let it do its thing.. So I mainly rake what the girls scatter. I'm gonna turn it in a few days just to see what the inside looks like.
 
It's been a long week... My symptoms were really bugging me... I don't understand why I still get them that one time a month when I have them pretty manageable the rest of the time. No special breakfast for my chickens today.... Just regular feed cause I'm not feeling up to par. Got a lot for my little backyard wedding done craft wise and that will probably be my focus today... Glad I got the coop cleaned out with fresh bedding on it two days ago. Still only one hen out of 8 is laying for me and she seems to be skipping a couple days a week.... Especially if she lays a large egg. Don't understand why Alice won't lay.... Beautiful red comb and wattle... But yet not one egg. I understand my jersey Giants may take some time. They are just cool birds to watch/ gental Giants. Lucy doesn't seem to maturing and she is Ethel's sister... Poor Ethel, working hard producing food for our family. Ethel has decided she wants to be a house pet. She has learned to use the doggie door... Hmmmmm I'll be watching shows and there she comes strutting along into the living room. Oly girl is pretty good at herding her back outside. Life isn't too bad.... Financial stress just like most others but I do enjoy and love my biggggggg family. Teenager boys everywhere!!!! This is why I need my girls to start laying... These boys and their friends eat endlessly and there is never enough food. Putting a hauler to building until the wedding is over and then I will focus on winterizing the coop and yard. Love my chickens!!!! I could just sit there and watch them for hours. My animals have it good. Wonder if they even realize it.
Well off to shower and stuff. May not be the best mom, but never doubt my animal keeping skills!!!!!!!! I train the best of them. To bad boys aren't so easy. Have a great day today!!!!!!
 
Oh forgot to add that little jerry Seinfeld has grown huge and he is only 15 weeks old and man!!!!! His feet are huge so that tells me he is gonna get quite bigger. He still doesn't realize he's a rooster and my little Alice girl always torments him... Don't think he realizes how much bigger he is then the girls are. No crowing as of yet... But he is one beautiful Delaware with the perfect barred tail and neck!!!! Could be show worthy but his comb is not up to par.. To many points.
 
Yep I did it!!! Don't know why but I followed an old wives tale just to see what would happen!!!! Went out and mixed my girls some breakfast and added some ground cayenne pepper to the mix. Only time will tell if it works. Lol. The good news is they really liked the flavor so they were focuses on eating their feed this morning!!!!! Hahaha call me crazy but at least my girls are getting a little spice in life.

What's the hoped for outcome?
They can't detect the 'heat'...... but the best reason I've read to use it is that it makes them drink more water so it can boost egg production.

How old are they?
Are they free range? If so, and they are of age, have you tried confining them to instill the habit of laying the coop nests?

Signs of onset of lay---I've found the pelvic points to be the most accurate.
Squatting:
If you touch their back they will hunker down on the ground, then shake their tail feathers when they get back up.
This shows they are sexually mature and egg laying is close at hand.

Combs and Wattles:
Plump, shiny red - usually means laying.
Shriveled, dryish looking and pale - usually means not laying.
Tho I have found that the combs and wattles can look full and red one minute then pale back out the next due to exertion or excitement, can drive ya nuts when waiting for a pullet to lay!

2 bony points on either side of vent:
Less than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means not laying.
More than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means laying.
