Oh right mines constantly doing that as well as the thing yours is doing we have been told she may have something stuck in the thraot just going to see if she as and what needs to be done. Im new to chickens aswell had mine 3 week.

It does sound like she's trying to crow, but coud also have something stuck I had one to do that and finally she got it down and she stopped the noise.

One of my hens made some terrible noises for the week leading up to her laying an egg. She was loud, made funny moves with her mouth and acted kind of crazy. could she be squatting? She still makes noise when she lays but not like that week. good luck.

I am also clueless - sorry. It does look like she's trying to learn to crow or do the hen cackle thing. I have some hens that can do a pretty darn good rooster crow and once they lay an egg (because you know they are the only hen in the whole wide world ever to do so) they crow for what seems like an eternity announcing the blessed event.

If she seems healthy in all other respects and you've check down her throat (use a flashlight and hold her beak open with her tongue gently pulled out and down) and you don't see anything - then all you can really do is wait and see. At 5 months she should be laying soon and might just be working on her "Town Cryer" voice.

that looks like a sneeze and a cough + a bit of a crow thrown in for confusion. Definitely a sneeze at the beginning. If this was my bird, I would separate and rule out gapeworm- either with a vet visit & a exam down the trachea and attempt to get a swab to look for the worm OR just treat for gapeworms and see if the symptoms go away. IMO it is always best to get an actual diagnosis, as if it is gapeworm- you will want to treat all birds. I do not think this is just an attempt to learn to crow or cackle.

thanks for asking. she is the same she eats and drinks but still does that all day long. she seems to do it more when she is up and moving.it has been over a week now and i still cant figure out what is wrong..... do you think she has worms? and what should i use and where do i get it? thanks again. jan

I've noticed that scratch is really hard on some chickens. I have one especially that tends to get it stuck in her throat, and then it causes inflamation, which keeps the coughing going. I wonder what would happen if you quit giving her scratch?
You might keep her in a crate by herself, stop the scratch, and give her some aspirin for a few days and see if it eases up.
