Bunnylady - glad you have that desire to breed for quality rather than to simply say you have seramas. I don't show, but I want the best birds I can get, otherwise I'm not doing any good at all - rather just adding to the number of chickens that need "pet" type homes. It always gets me when people say they breed show quality seramas, and they have no type what so ever... Just saw that today - Grrr!! It's frustrating! (sorry for that mini rant

) Anyway, good for you!

I hear you! Having bred rabbits for over 20 years, I know that while excellence may not reproduce itself, lousy almost always does.

Are you talking abou the maylasian or American?

I meant the American. Somewhere (I think it was on this thread) I remember seeing someone say that they felt that only the typey birds should be called Seramas, that there are a lot of birds out there that are so far off type, they really ought to be just called an OE cross, or something. As to showing, I don't know. I only manage a couple of rabbit shows each year, I don't know that I'm up for poultry shows any time soon. However, I feel that if I am breeding something (and who can resist hatching chicks?!!) I want to be working with breeders that are clearly good quality. Not necessarily show quality, but good enough that the idea of them producing it doesn't seem far-fetched!

Well Sounds like you have a plan for the future! Its good to have birds that you can show when you decide to! We have been in walking horses for over 14 years and had 2 World Grand Champions, once we were out of the horses we got into Rabbits and didnt have luck at all, now you can see where we are now

I wouldnt give up the chickens for nothing!!!! I enjoy the poultry shows more than any Ive tried... especially Seramas!!! I first started out with mainly pet birds nothing special, I did have one really nice cockerel from Bluegrass on here; but it wasnt till Ohio Nationals( Serama National meet) till I got serious with the breed, I bought "Troubadour" the National Champion from Grady. then I bought 2 black hens another show male and a white pair from Dianne at Kentuckiana!!! I dont regret taking the little journey out of my usual Featherlegs! Accually Im getting ready for another journey... Im getting into the Rosecombs!

they felt that only the typey birds should be called Seramas, that there are a lot of birds out there that are so far off type, they really ought to be just called an OE cross, or something.

My chicks are coming on Friday from Natures hatchery. Sooooo exited but I have discovered these little seramas and am facinated. I am waiting for the local County Fair to go see some of the breeds in person and hoping against hope that there are some seramas there to see. I can't wait!!

, but it would be great if you could post some pictures of him standing on a flat surface posing for the camera. I know, easier said than done, but there are a few people on here who have a good eye, and even if he's not in the best pose, will be able to see past that. Although, be forewarned that you might not like what everybody has to say either...

I will try and get better photos of him today. I just loved his color and temperment! he loves to be hand fed bread and sit in with me! he is my pocket roo!

Does anyone know a breeder named Jerry Schexnayder? I think he is big into seramas. Anyways, he lives only a few miles away from me in the same town. Any info on him? I might buy a pair or trio from him idk Too bad he doesnt have silkies! ;p

From what I understand, saying that Jerry Schexnayder is "big into Seramas" is sorta like saying that Michael Jordan was a basketball player, or Elvis Presley was a singer. He is reputed to be the person at the epicenter of the Serama craze, the man who imported something like 200 of the little birds and got the whole thing started! I can't imagine a better person to be getting birds from!
