Breed for it. Have correct type. While the Malaysians have tricks they use to get the extreme pose (place them singly into a very small box where they can only look up and out), I look for the birds that have the natural desire to pose (because I do not use the training box). Sure, you can train them, daily time on the table top asking them to pose, but you'll only achieve so much with a bird that doesn't have correct type. Seramas are a vertical breed, they are designed to be a V-shaped bird. Trying to make a serama that has a horizontal profile (like every other poultry breed out there) into the desired V-shape is like trying to put a square block into a circular hole.

Right now the laying season is over. I've pulled them to conditioning pens for this year's show season. Check with me in March when I put together the breeding pens again. I'll have white, blue fawn, grey, black and blue (aka bibbed).

How are things in MN? Last time I was home (2 yrs ago now) East Bethel had grown leaps and bounds. I remember when it was a teeny tiny town. I would be you are almost considered a northern burb now.

East Bethel is now a suburb yeppers lol. SO much that they changed the local chicken ordinance and are making it hard for folks to keep their pets, there are still quite a few farms tucked away here and there but for the most part it has been developed into mansion sized houses and taken away all the nice mature trees which is a real bummer, I have lived out here for almost 5 years now (former city girl) But remember when it was nothing like it is here today. I am the only brave soul around here with 44 chickens and 2 call ducks, everyone else broke down and sold their birds before the all mighty inspector tags em, I however am prepared to fight for my birds

Not really, every time I think I'm going to get a surplus, the hens prove me wrong. So I've pretty much decided to only sell well started stock to adults.

Julie,
Beautiful little Seramas you have!... Decided I had to have some so now I have some in the hatcher on day 19 now. All looked fertile...hope to get some to hatch...should have probably put them under a broody instead of the bator..hoping for some peepers!

Thanks for the tip! The lady I bought them from has shown these birds, and the photos of the parent hens and cockerel show a very nice vertical profile. Hopefully this means that I will get some posing birdies.

Seramas truly are a one of a kind chicken. As much as I love all my breeds, I just find seramas so much more personable. Although my little Gretchen (araucana) is sure challenging the top spot.

Mine usually hatch on day 19. It's rare that they go to day 21 unless I have a power issue. Good luck with the hatch, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!
