I would be very interested if I was closer. If you change your mind about shipping eggs, please let me know.

I've been lurking on this thread for a while. Thank you to everyone that's posted - I'm really learning a lot. I have my first set of Serama eggs in the incubator right now. So far 6 of the 12 are developing. I have my fingers crossed that I don't lose too many more.

I am in South Dakota and am interested in some seramas , I have and insulated coop with a heat lamp that has not gone below 40 degrees this winter, and it hasI been a dandy. I have D'anvers, cochins and a few silkies all fair well in the winter and I never have any frostbite on these birds. Are there any tips to keep seramas healthy and warm enough in this arctic weather that we deal with here?

Most of my Seramas have 'hot plates" in their pens. I don't know if it's necessary, but they enjoy sitting on them. It's just a 13w spiral bulb inside a cookie tin. I feed them a little more scratch or ground corn this time of year as well.

My two started laying at about 4 1/2 months, laid for about 4-5 weeks, about 4-5 eggs a week each and then plopped their broody bottoms in the box together. I did not let them keep any eggs since we were having temps to below 0. I put them on wire a week or so later and after about 1 1/2 weeks, I got an egg today

These birds are my favorite so far by personality. They absolutely CRAVE attention! I have 2 young cockerels for sale and will have hatching eggs and chicks available. I have some pre-broody eggs hatching this week.

MelissaR let me know when you'd like some more eggs. I am not hatching right now but the girls are laying like crazy!!! I can also ship eggs when the weather gets a bit warmer. I also travel to Mpls often for work so we could always meet up somewhere. All the birds I have gotten from people are offspring from birds they had gotten from Jerry. Easy to keep track of the lineage that way.

Winters here are pretty brutal so I keep mine in the house over the winter, cheaper then running heat lamps, heated waterers ect...
I think they'd be fine in 40 degree temps tho just a personal prefference for me to take them in.

Thanks Chickenaddict! I may be taking you up on that if these don't hatch. I've read about how hard it is to get them to hatch... Then again, I could use this as an excuse to buy a nicer incubator.

It's kinda funny how this chicken addiction has progressed. I used to think keeping a chicken in the house was kinda wierd. Now I'm looking at chicken diapers and trolling craigslist for something to convert into an indoor coop.

I am in Michigan. I have Standards, bantams, some of which are Seramas. I have coops which are insulated with straw bales stacked around the outside. I put tarps on the north and west sides of the run, for wind break. I do not use lights or heat. My birds, including the Seramas are thriving. They snuggle right up to the others and strut around the run, as well. They are much hardier, in my opinion, than people sometimes think. I know several people who have told me they do the same with the same results. I do have a heated waterer and make sure they have plenty to eat.
