Jen,

I'm no expert on frizzle, but I know you shoudn't go frizzle X frizzle or get too strong on the frizzle gene or you will end up with naked chickens. There is a frizzle club...do a google search..I think it is called American Frizzle Club or Frizzle Club of America. You can get a lot of good information about frizzles there. I thought your goal was to breed a color line the color of your hen.

Yes one of my goals is to get that color in my hen. I don't have fab roo to go with her yet so in the mean time I have her with my frizzle roo.
My other litlle project are the frizzles. I think they are soooooo cute! I no that you aren't supposed to breed frizzle to frizzle or it can cause problems. I have my smooth hens with the frizzle roo and my smooth roo with my frizzle hens.
I really need a nice roo to go with her but I'm not having any luck finding one. (Hint hint lol)
I no that smooth to frizzle will get some of each so maybe I will get lucky.

I was told 35 degrees. I move mine into small rabbit style cages with a shared lamp between cages and they have always done well with that. I havent had any frostbite or purple combs. They actually like to be let out on a warm and sunny winter day. I had one hen that actually laid more eggs when it was colder than she did in the spring and winter. I think it depends on the tolerance they are allowed to build from the get go.

If it helps any, I've found that my Serama all comb out early and if the comb is orangish, they are usually pullets!

What if they are little roos? Then what color is the comb usually?

Woo Hoo the new Serama's from Jerry arrived today!! He is AWESOME looking. Will post pics within a day or so. He is a bit stressed out today and I dont really want to push him. She could care less that she moved to a new house. You would think shes been here since hatch day. lol.

Jen--if this helps----
Frizzle breeding is similar to blue. Frizzle to smooth will produce 1/2 frizzled and 1/2 smooth. Frizzle to frizzle will produce 1/2 frizzled, 1/4 smooth and 1/4 curlies(a double dose of the frizzle gene which look very rough and partially feathered). Smooth to curlie will produce 100% Frizzle.

I breed Frizzle to smooth and get the 50/50.... I think we are going to do project curly this year, but the problem is that I would have one little bird that would need lots of attention, and wouldn't handle temperature changes well. I love that I have birds that are acclimated to the weather and can spend lots of time on grass in the tractors. I think that it might be cruel, unless I learn to sew tiny sweaters. ....or I could buy them from some of the talented seamstresses on here! The jury is still out on this one for me.

Congrats on your little roo! I know his parents! lol He should pass on more columbian-ish and speckled babies.

So a curlie is a double frizzle and if you put a smooth with it you get 100% frizzle. I thought it was really hard on them or something when I guess you say they turn out to be a curly???
You no his parents????? He is really cute! the babies are yellow and black so I am guessing that the yellow will turn white and I think they are going to look a lot like him. They sure didn't get ANY of the moms colors!!

Forgot to ask, someone said to look at there wings and this is a good way to tell if they will be frizzle or not?????

I'm not sure about frizzle but I think that the silkied variety grows flight feathers that look like little feather dusters.
It looks like 3 or 4 out of Amy's brood of 7 chicks may be silkied? They are about 3 weeks old.

(She won't hold still long enough for a clear shot in this light)

Here are some pics of the pair we just received from Jerry. Both are beautiful. The pics dont do him justice at all! The only issue is they arent very tame so he has a lot of work ahead of him!
