kelliepulido - What have your hatch rates been like? I don't want to know who you got the eggs from, just in general. I have heard how difficult Serama eggs are to hatch and I am hesitant to mail order any of my own. I ordered 6 eggs about a year ago and only one hatched, not bad for mailed eggs I guess but still, I don't know if I should try for more or just buy more started birds.

ChickenRonin- I have had bad hatches and good hatches with shipped serama eggs. My very first serama eggs I bought off eggbid, she sent 10 eggs, I broke one trying to get them out of the bubble wrap, set 9 under a broody hen along with a few from my own birds at the time. Out of those 9 eggs 7 hatched. That to me was amazing, the seller did such a great job on packing them I was really impressed. Next batch of eggs I bought on BYC here, got the eggs and some were moldy inside their packaging. Somehow moisture got in there added with the poop on the eggs it was a horrid mess. I ended up setting only 2 of the 8 eggs on that one. Both hatched but one of the babies up and died for no reason at 1 month old leaving me with 1 survivor who thankfuly turned out to be a pullet.

2 out of 2 and 7 out of 10 so really good rate 7 out of 10 the first 2 eggs didn't even start so they were out the 1st round of candling

I have better hatch rates on shipped serama eggs under a broody. I got eggs from Bluegrass and PPP one time I set the eggs from bluegrass under a broody and all hatched except 1, the eggs from PPP I used an incubator but mind you it was a LG still air

only 2 hatched, they all started to develop but died shortly after or made it to lockdown but never hatched. I've had alot of people say they are harder to hatch. I've sent eggs and almost all hatched and then some where 1 or none hatched. It all depends on how the PO handles them and the incubation.

When are you getting them? I have turned off my incubator for this year, not plugging it back in until next Spring.

Well..I'm hoping I can convince my dad to let me get them for 4H which starts this month, hopefully I can get my pair this year. so next spring would be great, since their first eggs I want to hatch in hopes of getting a SQ chickc so i can enter it in a poultry show! I will let you know.

Well, I'm going to try hatching out some Serama eggs. This will be the last hatch of the year. No really, I mean it this time

Thanks for the info guys.

I just have to vent for a second because I'm annoyed. My serama rooster went and got his comb and wattles all bloodied up last night. I just moved the guinea fowl into a pen next to his, and he decided to go pick fights with the cantankerous guineas. There was a fence between them so I thought it'd be fine, but the guineas managed to get at him through the fence. The injuries aren't bad, they'll heal without an issue, but it irritates me that his comb and wattles look all beat up. Not a good decision, Prince.

I put up some fabric between the two pens now so the guineas can't see Prince and vice-versa.

I sold one of my serama hens today. It's always sad giving up a bird, even knowing that she's going to a completely awesome home.

Can't keep every serama I hatch, though, and the man I sold her to is extremely thankful that I decided to sell her to him. She is going back with her hatchmates I sold him a few months ago!
