I am watching these three very close to see how they finish out, they are all full siblings and very interesting in color.

I may take the darkest one to my solid black hen and see what I get??

Oh, aren't they cute

There are so many genes that can affect the way chocolate looks phenotype wise, that I would expect as breeders beging straightening out the colors, more will surface. I'll have to do more breeding to convince myself that I have any that are chocolate. I know enough about equine genes to know that the way they "look" isn't always what they are genetically and they won't be able to be produced reliably. Mine may just visually appear like a chocolate but if they don't breed like a chocolate should, then they are not chocolate. The chocolate genetics are pretty clear cut and simple so no one is going to get unexpected results when breeding and be able to assume that they're still chocolate.

I'm so excited!! I should *hopefully*

I have 3 seramas in lockdown right now - it's day 18 - and more in another incubator waiting to be candled for lock down next week. I hate this waiting.....

Hello all - part of my christmas was this really neat coop that i intend on raising seramas on - very secure - inside is like a little swiss chalet - nest boxes - roosts - and in the front top is like a loft. Pretty neat. The run is about 4 feet wide and 6 feet long and can be moved around like a tractor almost to the sides. Will this be sufficient for raising seramas in? I notice alot of people keep them in cages - this is more of a coop. I will of course be heating it in the winter - but it is insulated. Thoughts?
Thanks
Knox

Inkheart, that is one cool coop! Lucky you!!

I don't know how many Serama's you could keep in there but it would sort of depend on if your roosters can live together. I don't know for sure how many hens a Serama rooster can effectively cover so those are things you may want to consider too. Looks to me like it would work for quite a few Serama's though

As far as the wire on the outside pen, it looks pretty huge to me. You will never be able to house young Serama's in it unless you change the wire, which isn't so hard to do. If you live in an area with a lot of varmints, those holes are plenty large for rats and weasels to get through. I don't have an issue with my dogs here to protect but I can't put any young Serama out in mine unless they're caged. Right now, mine is chain link dog pen panels with chicken wire at the corners to close in the gaps so the smaller Serama adults don't get spooked and slip through, they always run into a corner you known. I had some young Araucana chicks and one of them slipped out of the chain link too so I really went over it again and fixed the problem areas. Hopefully, I'll be able to replace that whole yard with panels made with the small wire like my other coop in my big barn. I'm still working on my building, I started with a pony sized lean to shed. It's partially insulated now and heated. We have 3 windows to put in and the door. I currently have heavy gage plastic over the door. It works but it's all a work in progress. You are so lucky to have such a nice set up!

Acutally i had already thought about the run part - they are pretty darn big spaces - my friend who gave it to me raised Japanese bantams in there - not sure how those babies didnt slip thru! But i am going to fix that part up with some much smaller wiring. There are about 10-12 small nest boxes on the inside to the left built into the wall so - who knows! LOL I was thinking of jsut starting with a trio in the spring or hatching some eggs but am learning that is MUCH easier said that done!

Hello folks. Since this is a Serama thread, I figured somebody here would have eggs for sale. Please pm me if you do or will have. I have lost my only Serama Rooster and I need another. Thanks.

Love the coop, Inkheart! It's got some real cool detail work on it. I'm more into function rather than style when I build things myself, but I think that sort of thing is so fun to look at!

I've got a question, but first, a little background. My Serama hen has been laying again (she lays one egg every two days), and I've been setting her eggs a few at a time in the incubator. So far, I have 7 chicks from 11 eggs. The last chick to hatch was one of 3 eggs. The other two eggs quit, and I wound up peeling this one on day 22. The chick is teensy tiny (less than 2 inches tall), and I wound up leaving it in the incubator for a couple of days to gain strength before I put it in the aquarium with the other chicks, some of which are more than 2 weeks older than it is. In my experience with other breeds, putting a lone new chick into the brooder with birds that much older would have been curtains for the newby, so I introduced it with fingers crossed. No problem! Within minutes they were all snuggled down together, with the little guy spang in the middle of the huddle. Is this typical of Serama? I've seen some sparring, so I am sure there are some roo's in the group, but I have never seen a new chick accepted with so little fuss. In fact, most of the pecking was done by the little one - it seemed fascinated by the bigger chicks' feet - the other chicks were amazingly gentle. The more I get to know these birds, the more I love them!
