Hey all. Its been a while since I've been on this thread. Candace I'm glad you're hatch is going well. I really do love the birds I hatched from you. I haven't hatched any eggs from them myself, but they are fertile. I send some out to a friend this morning via an egg swap. I hope she gets a good hatch. If not, I'll definitely be sending some more. I'm going to get my incubators up and running this weekend. I've been meaning to do it for a while now, but I have been sick.

I have a question that may have been addressed in earlier threads, but i have not run accross it . What do most people use in the bottum of the pens if they are keeping thier Seramas in the house?

I am far from an expert but I use macaw cages with perches all through it at different heights and shavings in the bottom. Sometimes they make a bit of a mess but for the most part they behave, and they love to bounce around to all the perches and have the large space to live. Good luck!

I kept mine in a large wire dog crate (I moved them down to the kennel in the basement and gave their cage to my isa chicks). I wrapped 3 sides with felt to keep the dust in. And I cover the front and the top so the rooster won't wake us up early. For litter I use pine pellets in a cement mixing bin that fits perfectly inside the crate. I used 2x2's for perches in 2 levels, a regular caged-bird feeder, and a water bottle.

I would definitely use a deep bottomed pan with high sides to keep them from kicking out bedding. I use shavings, and sometimes I get a thin plastic (thanks to Liz!) and poke some holes in it and zip tie it around the bottom level. This is about 6 inches or so tall, and keeps in a lot of the shavings. I think you could also use sand if you wanted...
I keep feeders and waterers on bricks to keep them off the shavings so they sit flat.

In spring and summer, mine lay eggs almost daily. In autumn and winter, they hardly lay at all.
