Check out my coop ...It is wa-a-ay more crowded in there now, this was taken "early on"...

You can see, however, how my breeding pairs/trios are kept separate, so I can track who's throwing what-with-whom!

What is the space requirements for seramas?

I keep about 3-5 birds in a 2 ft by 4 ft pen about 3 ft high

Is anyone else having troubles hatching their serama eggs under broodies? I set 4 eggs under a hen 21 days ago today, 2 hatched on day 18 and 19, the others appear to have made it full term but died in the egg before they could pip. In the past I have had great success hatching under broodies verses incubators but for some reason this particular batch of eggs which came from new birds I aquired last fall that are now 8 months old haven't done a darn thing. I was soooo excited to see how the little ones would turn out. The 2 serama eggs that did hatch (the day 18 one and day 19) were from my older seramas. Not a good start for spring hatching

I'm a bit disappointed.

Thanks!

Were going to build 4x4 screened in cages tho place in the barn for our breeding birds, and they are going to be on wheels to wheel out side during the day while we are out so we can watch them and they can enjoy the fresh air.

My 4 Seramas I got from Amy are doing good. Looks like I have 3 females and one cute boy!!

Looks like the 'Twins' have white mollted chest and are so sweet. Honey is a Buff/Mollted color, and the 3rd female ( who isn't named yet ) has a millie Fleur pattern. Hopefully I can take some pics this weekend.

I think I have created a monster . . . . .

Yesterday, I went into my living room, and found my daughter sitting in there. She was surrounded by 19 Seramas in assorted rabbit carriers, watching "The Natural History of the Chicken" on Netflix. Does anyone else find this kind of - um - "peck"uliar?

ChickenAddict,
I just pitched 5 eggs that were under a broody that were quitters. They were some of the first from Truffles too so that was a real bummer, I have 4 in the incubator to hatch tomorrow but those candled good. Miss Prissy was setting so good then just got off the nest and the eggs were cool to touch so I candled them and they had were fertile but died early on.

These were collected when we were still having freezing cold so I guess that could have been part of it, plus when she would get off the nest to eat early on, I'm sure it was pretty cold so they may have chilled. I was scolding Prissy so I had to apologize, she knew they weren't good. Bugsy, the black hen, is setting 6 of Truffles eggs, due to hatch the 14th or 15th so I'll be slipping a couple out and candling them soon. Truffles went broody today with just 1 egg under her so I gave her 4 that were put in the incubator a couple of days ago. The one laid today will be slipped out to hatch in the incubator when the others begin hatching, expected hatch date for those is also the 15th. Wish the girls luck with these.

OMG did they all start screaming when Liza was attacked by the hawk?? We were all crying.....

No, but I did hear a couple of the roosters growl. Then they all got real quiet.

Mentioning roo's, we have a couple that I think are trying to be ventriloquists. They crow with their beaks shut! It's amazing how much quieter they are than the ones that scream at you with eyes popping and beak wide open! Has anyone else seen a rooster do this?
