Hatching birds does not make a person an expert. Years of experience and learning does. Mites are easily treated. I seriously doubt you have had these birds long enough to infect your entire flock. Did you put them straight in without checking them or quarantining them for 30 days?

If you don't want them to hatch chicks and you want them to quit laying you could get some dummy eggs for them to sit on when they go broody. After a few weeks they'd quit the broodiness and start laying again, but at least they wouldn't have any babies. Or you could let them set only 1 egg, that way you'd only have 1 more mouth to feed and mama wouldn't start laying again until after the baby's grown up.

I think you make a very good point I have dummy eggs around from when I use to breed pigeons I think I going to stop breeding right now cause their is way too many egg laying and hatching going on and my wife is starting to think Im crazy ...

I'm with you all...I had a shocker today.

My hen, Dovey, who has only laid about 4 eggs total in 2 years laid an egg today. I have no idea if it will hatch or not. I had given up on her laying or hatching any from her but she's so sweet I kept her just because. Just to keep her from being constantly bothered by the roosters, I had let her live with the chicks that were mostly feathered out that were living in the outside pen to grow up. I brought home 2 pairs of silkied Serama's that I got from June in Oklahoma and I wanted to use one rooster then the other to the 2 hens rather than 2 pairs so I let Dovey live with Roger. He was very sweet and was so nice with her so they must have paired up. She may not lay another egg but I marked this one and put it under one of my Araucana hens that is setting and I'll definitely be checking this one in about 14 days to check fertility. Humm, not planned but I'm hopeful for a Silkied chick if anything hatches. If it's a straight feathered it will be offered for free as a pet only and I may give it away here so it's not included in the gene pool. There are enough surprises in breeding Serama's without a breeder finding out that their hen or rooster that they really like is carrying a Silkied gene if they don't want it.

If she lays more I'll just faint

If her egg hatches, I owe her a meal worm dinner. I had hoped and prayed for chicks from this hen since I got her from Jerry. Something triggered her, maybe Love??

The "really" funny part is that "TODAY" I gave her some fresh water and told her how sweet and pretty she was and I actually said this out loud....."if you would just give me some eggs, I'd buy you some meal worms".....this is no lie,

Still shaking my head.

Looking at the chicks I'm thinking I hatched a chick from each of my three hens!

The yellow one must be from Honey, the striped one might be from Roughnut, and the brown/red one from Bridget. I can't wait to see how they feather out.

I have more eggs due to hatch next week, can't wait to see what I get from the upcoming batch!!

Hi Ruth,
Isn't he cute? I just know he won't work in my bigger plan.......like I'm a planner,
lol.png

He's by Blu so he will be a very nice type and small. The darker hen that I got from you or the mottled hen from Cara is the hen this guy is out of. Blu is a B and both hens are B's but you know how that can go. I can't really guess what color he will be, just that the color he is now is not likely going to be close. Blue was a really funky color at this age, not the same as this chick but absolutely nothing like he is now so they can change dramatically.

If you have a chick to trade, we can trade anytime you want.....
