I'm with you all...I had a shocker today.
My hen, Dovey, who has only laid about 4 eggs total in 2 years laid an egg today. I have no idea if it will hatch or not. I had given up on her laying or hatching any from her but she's so sweet I kept her just because. Just to keep her from being constantly bothered by the roosters, I had let her live with the chicks that were mostly feathered out that were living in the outside pen to grow up. I brought home 2 pairs of silkied Serama's that I got from June in Oklahoma and I wanted to use one rooster then the other to the 2 hens rather than 2 pairs so I let Dovey live with Roger. He was very sweet and was so nice with her so they must have paired up. She may not lay another egg but I marked this one and put it under one of my Araucana hens that is setting and I'll definitely be checking this one in about 14 days to check fertility. Humm, not planned but I'm hopeful for a Silkied chick if anything hatches. If it's a straight feathered it will be offered for free as a pet only and I may give it away here so it's not included in the gene pool. There are enough surprises in breeding Serama's without a breeder finding out that their hen or rooster that they really like is carrying a Silkied gene if they don't want it.
If she lays more I'll just faint
If her egg hatches, I owe her a meal worm dinner. I had hoped and prayed for chicks from this hen since I got her from Jerry. Something triggered her, maybe Love??
The "really" funny part is that "TODAY" I gave her some fresh water and told her how sweet and pretty she was and I actually said this out loud....."if you would just give me some eggs, I'd buy you some meal worms".....this is no lie,
Still shaking my head.
Here is Dovey, she is my most typey hen
Here is Roger, a Silkied Serama rooster
