I have a male Embden goose that is mated with the only female in my little flock of 4. The smallest male goose is a Sebastopol. He has lost almost all of his curly feathers during this first mating season, but seems to have a deep bond with the Embden. Daily they will bath together in one of the pools and the Embden will mount the Sebastopol. Currently the Sebastopol has a sore foot. We have a bandage on it and have been trying to isolate him for at least several hours when we change the bandage.

All four are very close and the other three will visit the Sebastopol when he is in isolation. I let him out this afternoon, limping, but glad to be with the others. Within 10minutes he and the Embden were starting their "mating" activity with a bucket of water. The Embden started to mount the Sebastopol and I stopped it, but they just keep trying. The Sebastopols' foot is obviously hurting him, but he seems to want the attention. The top of his wing feathers are also showing wear. I thought about making him a Chicken Saddle for him.

Is this common?

Yeah, horomones.....

Things settle down later in the summer usually.

Breeding Season so much fun. 9 month out of the year you will have a great relationship but for 3 month everything is up in the air. You will ask yourself if its worth it sometimes but breeding season ends and they become you buddy's again. Mine has been crazy this year. 2 boys in love with one girl has been the hardest. Walked out yesterday and she was attacking them. rode one across the pasture and when she didn't get serviced rode the next one. Literately pined both at the top of the neck and rode them then one of the boys finally one did what she wanted fertilized her egg. Love your babied 9 month a year. Try to like them the other 3. I guess what Im saying is I have 6 geese and 6 ganders. But Trouble my goose owns 2 the boys. And yes thous 2 boys wouldn't do anything without each other. Wish sometimes we understood goose. But its breeding season so nothing makes sense to them or us. Dang Hormones

I hope so, they were such good company.

As a side note, I incubated some of the eggs from the female and one hatched (out of 6). So, so, so cute! The only geese that I could find quickly were the African and the White Chinese. I chose the African. Its' little black beak and big black eyes won me over.

He is going soooooo fast. I call it a he, but I do not know for sure. He and my little hatchling are fast friends. The mother and father have no interest, but one of the ganders is extremely interested and sits with them when I have been able to take them outside for a bit. They seem to like his company and touch beaks through the chicken wire.

Thanks Cara

Yes, he was one of two of the geese that was banded. He has not made any attempts to make a nest. I do think he tried to mate with the female, but lost out to the much larger Embden.

Okay, just making sure. I've had ducks mate with anything that moves, but never geese. It's odd that a male would want to mount another male when there is a female available.

I think that Curley wanted to mate with Tilly, and may have at one time, but the largest Gander won her affection. I would not think that the two ganders would have such mating activity everyday though. Oh well. I know that her eggs are fertilized, but by whom is anyones guess, especially the older ones.
