Ok Folks! This is bizarre: my 3 year old ISA Brown hen has always been alpha. I assume she has layed eggs but as I have 10, I never see her actually lay the egg. She has frequently jumped atop her "friends" and acted like she was mating. I read that this can be normal and thought no more about it.

Today as I watched the flock she hopped on a hen and because of my line of sight I saw a penis like protrusion come out of the vent and retract after several seconds. I am perplexed. Any thoughts?

That's a hen, there is no "penis" in the vent of male chickens.
Ok. As a former RN and science teacher, I understand. So, what did I see? I am absolutely certain I saw a cylindrical 1 to 1 1/2 inch protrusion come out and then retract.

I looked up the anatomy of the area in question and see that rooster have a bump or patila on the back wall of the vent. This is the sperm delivery organ. So I am flummoxed at what I saw. I may check her vent when she goes to roost tonight.
