Hi, I found this chick about three weeks ago in our yard. It most likely got lost from its mother and was crying for her for hours. There were no chickens close to our house so I have no idea where it's mother was. Despite never owning chickens before(I am totally new to this), I decided to raise it, as it would most likely be killed by cats who frequently roam the area. I've had it for three weeks now, so I'm assuming it's around 4 weeks old (looked to be around 5 days old when I caught it). So I had a few questions I am hoping you guys could answer:
1. Based on the pictures, does it look to be a male or female?
2. What type of chicken do you think it is? It also has 5 toes with slight feathering on its feet which I thought was unusual.
Thanks!!

Pullet.

It's a Silkie Mix.

Thanks for the quick response! Never owned or even new anything about chickens until we found this little guy in our yard, and decided to raise it. So far it's been a really fun and interesting journey!
I agree with the pullet call, but you should really get this chicken a friend or give it to a farm. They can't live happily without another chicken. It is emotionally isolating and should be avoided if at all possible.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I were to get another chicken, should I get one that is around the same age?

Yes, I would try if you can. If not, yours is still pretty young, so it will be ok if the new girl is a baby. keep them separate with a wire mesh in between for a few weeks so that they can see and smell each other, but not touch.

She’s GORGEOUS. How old is she? You couldn’t put a chick right in with her at that size, so if you can’t find an older chick you’d have to raise a baby chick til it was a bit bigger & could be outside with her.
