Male pheasant has plucked feathers out of the back of my female.

My wife went and picked up a pair of Red Golden Pheasants for me this morning. I just got home from work an went to look and the male has plucked a spot of feathers off the females back. Any ideas or should I separate them. They were fine at the store but now she is bad. They are in a small cage but will
Be transferred on Monday to their new cage. It's the same size as the cage at store with no problems. Should I seperate is this normal or will he kill her. Please help she seems fine just battered on back.
