One of my 5 hens laid what I would best describe as a 'faulty' egg. Beneath the roosting rods there is a 'poop' shelf covered with white sand which I slide out and clean daily. This morning I found among the poop deposits what appeared to be a malformed egg. It was not fully formed and the outer surface was the consistency of a rubber balloon.

Can someone enlighten me as to what this might represent?

Usually called a softshell or softie, but actually has no shell at all.
A glitch in the system, usually of no concern, especially with new layers it's quite common.
Older birds may pass these too as they ramp down laying production to go into a molt.
