mallard duck hatching & problem: please advise *pictures included*

I hope someone can help too. If his intestines are out, I sure don't want him to suffer. But if it is yolk maybe he could make it...

I am glad he is being so calm right now, but that worries me too.

It looks like what runs back to the shell has blood in it & maybe a little blood left in the shell bottom. But wouldn't the yolk be further from the body? Or do they draw the yolk right up to their bodies & are still attached to the shell. I feel like such a newbie:)

I have to leave in about an hour... should I just leave him like he is?

He just isn't moving like the chickens did when they hatched. He's a beautiful bird... I hate that there is a problem:(

I have to say leave him... until you KNOW what if anything is wrong... you don't wanna move him!

If everything is normal, he is probably resting after all the work he's done. When do you think you'll be back?

I am no expert, but just hatched my first mallard this morning and saw the same thing. My best guess was that it was the placenta still attached. There was some blood on it, but it broke off from the shell when he finally emerged. He's up and around, generally in good spirits and all seems fine. Hope and pray your little one is A-okay!

Yes, it sounds like his umbilical cord. Just leave him alone a while. I have had chicks like that, and they were fine.

That makes me feel better:) It does seem a little smaller, but he has moved a bit & I can't see it as well.

I may just stay home & wait until DH gets home to go get milk.

I will update if ya'll want.

It looks like the part that attaches to the egg is thinning out & I don't see blood in it anymore. The bulge on the belly looks smaller and less red. He is still sleeping, but I know he has had a big day:)
