Mallard hen broken wing!!!!

She's still doing good. Healing up, she's able to hold her wing up to her body and move it around. They heal surprisingly fast. I'm going to wrap her up again tonight. I havnt been home since this morning and it's 12:34 am.

Well I can't get her to keep her wrap on and now her wing is swollen where the break is. It's huge. It's not really soft, so I don't know if they swell like we would?? I know when I broke my arm it got pretty swollen. But she's a bird.. Anyways, it has no odor at all, not draining and she still is acting fine.. I'm going to take her to the vet on Monday (can't afford it until after payday) to see about an injectable antibiotic for her. I can't afford an amputation of the wing and have nothing to numb the pain from her. Her muscles are still attached and everything. Any thoughts??

When I got both my brown muscovie hens,it seemed they both had broken legs. Actually one had a broken leg,the other just had a hole in her webbing, and sympathy pains for her sister.

What I found out is that they are fast healers.

for being a bird who gets preyed on, nature makes them a fast healer. the one with the hole in her webbing healed withing a day or two,the other(we call her limpy), has a limp in her leg,but she is healthy and frisky as ever.

I am sad for you and your duckie, but the good news is: she will never be able to fly and get into trouble again! Congrats, you now have a pet duck!!

So sorry you and her are going through this, I wish I could give you some info. about swelling but I just don't know. Maybe the vet can help you on finding a way to keep the wrap on her. If it's not draining or smelling I'm sure that has to be a positive. Does she act like she's in pain? Animals just don't preceive pain the way we do, You really have to be careful what you give ducks also so good your taking her to the vet. I hate to say this but he might mention euthanize if the brake if too far gone so be prepared just in case. Let us know what you find out, and we'll hope for the best.
