,I dont like mine to fly so I give them the show-mans wing clip, but I what I do know is that conditioning any bantam breed for any type of flight can be done by giving them a flight pen/aviary is an amazing way for them to train for long distance flights. I have seen it done with mandarins and it seemed to work great.
Why don't you like them to fly? And how do you keep them from getting fat without exercise? I don't think a flight pen would help, because my mallards fly outside in loops around my yard. I'm guessing they fly 5-10 miles in circles around the property.

Because I raise black mallards and I dont want the gene getting out of my possesion. The ones that stay in the aviaries do get to fly however.

And it's rather easy, with proper diet and giving them plenty of room to roam and swim they do very well staying very lean and flighty looking, now of course during brooding season the females do get alittle heafty because they are just sitting on nests, but by july they are usually back to their appropriate weight.

My ducks around that age, they were looking really obese before this, when they lost the baby feathers. They are pretty big compared to the local mallard girls today.

These are my pet mallards. Lucky is almost 2 yrs old... she is the one who gets out of the water first. The other two who are having all the fun is Donald and Hilary! They are 3 months old now. This video was from last month.

I wouldn't call that lean I would call that obese. Their crops are very low hanging and they have a very large keel, or "lobes",  which isn't caused by just one large meal, but by a very unhealthy diet, my apologies for calling them rouens they are just very overweight, leading to the rouen suspicion.
Ok so if the ducks are over weight can someone help with how you cut back on it? I currently have 17 other chickens and they are all mostly free range. Temps have been a little cold and they are a little over 6 weeks and just really getting out there so how do I decrease the overweight on them?
