OK, so with the information from the assisted hatching link and from EyeKeyYou I chipped away from the pointy end of the egg until the shell was not releasing from the membrane and a very slight bit of red showed. I coated the membrane with Neosporin and put it back into the hatcher. I will look at it again late tonight but think I will wait until morning before I try removing any more shell.

The Neosporin really helps see the veins and is supposed to help keep the membrane from drying out as well as fighting bacterial infection where the blood leaks. Looks like another BS or Cameo or Oaten or something with light colored feathers. I ran into blood at the very bottom left hand part of the picture, 7 o'clock area. The veining tells me that it is not ready yet.

I personally would hatch that chick now. It does not look bad at all and is definitely in a bad position. We never let them go past 24 hours. I have found that if they don't cut the blood flow off after about 12 - 14 hours, they are not going to and you are just going to have to chance it.

Well I just finished working on the egg. I pealed off all the shell except the part over the air sack. There is still a lot of blood in the membrane so I think I will wait until the morning to remove the membrane. I had one bleed out before so I am real cautious now. I coated the membrane with Neosporin and wrapped it in a warm wet paper towel. I added a sponge to the water tank to raise the humidity above 65%.

I also candled the remaining eggs, two look like quitters, two have internally piped, and the others look like they are days from hatching. They have the hatch date written on them, and I know they make up a lot of time in the last four days, but really, they don't look ready to me.

Good luck with the little guy! :fl
Please keep us posted...

X2! Will be thinking about you when I check on mine throughout the night. Just found two others pipped under a different hen, so gonna get a box, clean towel and bring them inside, lol.

Five hours later I got up to hatch the little chick and found it non-responsive. I unwrapped the membrane to see how far the process went and the tears bled and you can see that the veins are still holding blood. I think that if I had tried to hatch it would have led to death anyway. Notice that the yolk is totally absorbed and the navel is only a bit extended.

I think that instead of using the antibiotic to keep the membrane wet that using water might make more sense in as much that if you can dry out the membrane the blood will absorb into the chick instead of setting in the membrane.

Well this is not going to be my last time to do this so I guess that I will chalk it up to experience.

Thanks for all the suggestions and support during this process, I greatly appreciate your input.

Now I have a turkey in the same situation.

Sorry about the little one.

I used trip. ant. on the membrane one time and I wasn't crazy about it. It seemed to almost make the membrane tougher and harder to tear, I cannot remember if it also seemed to slow down the absorption in of the blood. I prefer the water and the moistened paper towels in between peeling. JMO
