Malpositioned

Veering off topic yet again to note that:
It looks like you are only allowed to "thumbs up" 10 helpful posts per day, or 20 if you are a Golden Feather.
I don't see anything about a quoting limit, though!

Probably my computer acting up. I tried to quote Kathy, and the "Originally posted by" line came up, but the text of the post did not. ????? :idunno

I've been having some issues replying, but not quite like you describe. I suspect it's a BYC issue, not your computer.

This malposition seems to keep them from being able to pip externally. At 6pm or so I peeled away the shell to where it is in this picture and stopped because I hit blood. Membrane shown had been moistened with distilled water. This one was out of the shell at 7am today.

@KsKingBee , so sorry for your loss, but thank's for sharing the details and pictures, I'm sure many will learn from it. How's the turkey doing?

-Kathy

You know I get so much help and support from the fine folks here in the Peafowl section I am glad that I can contribute is some small way. Turkey didn't make it through the night, it really blows that the peachick I lost was what I have been trying to get this year, either black shoulder or some variant of white, oaten, etc.

So sorry, seems to be a terrible year for so many! What do you think happened with the poult?

-Kathy

It looked like the very same thing as with the pea, upside down in the shell and got worn out trying to get out. I have another pea that is having trouble too and two more that still seem to have not developed to full stage yet. I don't know what happened with this batch, one hatched two days early like most of them do in the GQF set at 100. The next one day early then this one that looked internally piped but is now two days late, day 30. I made a hole in the top and looked in, it appears that it made a little hole in the membrane and is breathing but there is still a lot of blood in the membrane and it bled where it made a little hole in the membrane.

I just had it out and enlarged the hole to get a better look and to wet the membrane to see if the blood had absorbed into the chick but it does not look ready yet so I put tape back on the hole leaving a small opening for air and put it back into the hatcher. Then there are two more that don't look like they are ready yet either. I will let them set for another day and monitor the progress, I understand that they can sometimes go 32 days.

I think that the egg problems this year are due to the Cocci and secondary infections. Every one of the birds is totally cleared up and very healthy now but I still think that the stress and drugs hurt the viability of the eggs. As far as the malposition, maybe the eggs did not set correctly in the incubator trays.
