Mama C's first brood

My first broody was a Partridge Rock... I didn't hatch any with her but it was fun watching her try....

Boy I'm such a slacker. I come back to my thread 2 years later and see that people wanted more pictures....Well if any of you are still interested, here are some adult pictures of the remaining brood of Mama C.

Although, I should probably fill you all in the holes in the story. So there were originally 9 chicks. Well a week after they hatched, we were going to go to the beach. The enclosure I had put Mama in wasn't remotely chick-proof, so they kept waltzing through the fence. Mama didn't like that, and would pace the fenceline. I wasn't particularly worried about it, she could still keep an eye on them. But my dear kind-hearted father was disturbed by Mama, and so let her out. Now I wouldn't've minded that, except we were right about to leave on our trip (as in, 30 min till takeoff) I wasn't happy at all, but I didn't think I could get her back in. So we left her out.

When we came back after about 4 or 5 days, I can't recall, Mama C was gone, and there were only 8 chicks left. I was pretty darned upset. We asked the boy who took care of the animals if he noticed anything; he said he didn't. So we don't know what really happened.
They grew up just fine, all 8 of them. It turned out the sex was split evenly; 4 cockerels and 4 pullets.

This is Amelia. ^ (pic taken this past winter, when she was 1 & 1/2 years)
She and her 'twin' sister really got the heavy, full body type of the Plymouth Rock (as it's nicely demonstrated here

)

That's Monica on the left, her brother (whose name I forget, as we ate him

) on the right. He was really pretty and big. This was taken right before point of lay.

Him again.

All four pullets (pardon the flash) Unfortunately, the single combed girl met her untimely demise by being too independent. She inisisted on getting out of the coops, and eventually disappeared one day....
The buff one (3rd from right) is named Kiwi.

She's a pretty girl.

This is Foghorn, the lone survivor of the boys. He was just so sweet, I couldn't eat him. I unfortunately don't have any recent pictures of him, he is really magnificent now at 2 years old. (he just turned 2!

) The reason I don't have any pictures of him is that we gave him to my then-boyfriend, who is now my ex-boyfriend, so.....yeah. It would be kinda awkward to ask my ex to take pictures of their rooster.....

Here's the latest picture that includes two of the broody hatched birds with our new roo, Jonah. The little brown one on the left is Monica

And the buff one on the right (rosecombed) is Kiwi.

They are all really special birds. I think their personalities are very different than the others; they're certainly more robust. Also, God help anyone who steals eggs while their on them. These hens peck to kill. And Foghorn is the sweetest, most caring rooster ever (excepting Jonah).

Thanks for reading and looking!
