Mama Duck Attacked!!

OH, okay! I thought it sounded familiar! I almost checked out some property in that area. Lots of really pretty land down there. LOL, we would seem pretty far N. compared to you. We are in the Roseburg area, S. just a tad. Cool!

Mamacat what a wonderful thread. The other day when I read that Mama duck had passed I had tears and hoped that you'd take over as Mama. Today when I see the 2nd video I have tears and am so thankful you gave these little boogers a chance. You're a good hearted egg

ps they are such a beautiful color!!

Small world! I loved Germany ... reminded me of western Washington State where I was born and raised! In fact, I noticed on your website you'll be in Puyallup! I'm from Sumner right next door. BUT hubby and I currently live on his childhood farm and land in the north central Indiana country! Sure miss the mountains and ocean! But I have all the animals I could ever want so that's my tradeoff.

Love your website, got it bookmarked!!

We were considering the west side of the Cascades, but fell in love with this area. Plus land is cheap out here, but you have to deal with winters. What I really love and didn't know when we were looking for a land was that there are no feas or ticks up here.

Can't beat that with animals around. I also love that we have over 300 days of sunshine. The winters are really bright to the point that they make you almost blind with all the sun on the snow. Didn't have much snow this winter, but a really long cold wet spring. Not normal. The temps are supposed to go back down to 25 for the next couple of nights. Crazy.

Aw thanks so much. Everything just worked out so well I am still amazed and thrilled about it all myself!

Yes, the Blue Swede's have a very lovely coloring. Papa duck has joined the duck & geese patrol now. He was with Mamaduck in a separate area outside. It took awhile for them to accept him since the four white pekin ducks and six weeder geese had grown up together just a few months ago. But Papaduck just kept at them until they accepted him. It will be fun when his kids get old enough to join the rest! I should put up some vids of them too! I put Mamaduck as my avatar in her memory!!

Brooder setup. Just gave it some thoughts, because you've said that your temp doesn't get that high up. I would go more by the ducklings behavior. If they huddle tightly together then it is to cold. It they move around and just lay close to each other then you are fine and I would not even try to get it hotter. You have the setup in your house, no big temperature variation between day and night, so they should be fine. Plus the one duck did fine the first night. Larger breeds can usually live with less heat then small ones. Keep on doing what you are doing. I currently have 3 week old ducks that sleep in the duck house at 65 degrees at night. Technically they should be at 75, but they are doing fine at the lower temp. I simply keep an eye on their behavior, and they show no sign of being cold. I went down quickly with less strong light bulbs. Didn't even have to switch weekly, it was more like every couple of days. You will notice that they will move away from the lamp as they need less of it.

I'm glad they're accepting of Papaduck. It's hard to watch them be shunned. As moms, it's important that our "kids" be accepted and loved

Will do. They are at 91 degrees now and there is shade area. They seem fine, sleeping off and on, walking around, etc. I remember when we bought our pekin ducks we had a kittie pool set up and a heat lamp in the middle hanging down on it. Most of the time the ducks were around the sides! And the heat lamp wasn't even low on them. I am checking them about every 15-30 minutes or so to make sure they don't FRY or FREEZE although freezing in that heat might be difficult!
