Is it too high to touch their back when they are under?

That’s why I had it on medium because I thought if it was a little high to touch thier backs it would still be warm enough.

They need to touch it, especially in lower ambient temps.
Might be why they were on top, for better contact.

Ok half were under and half on top. I turned it down to low and yes they can touch thier back. Maybe it was too warm for all of them under there. I guided them under and will check on them after a bit. My rooster did not seem impressed at me messing around in the coop at at night lol

If their backs can touch underneath and they are on top they may be too warm underneath so will go up top.
If their backs can touch underneath, let them choose where to be.

Okay, after how many years of this being an active thread (?), Blooie needs HELP!!! I'm getting chick fever...and I'm getting it bad!! Remind me again why I rehomed...remind me about trying to keep water and food going when it's -20 degrees with sideways winds and snow that stings as soon as it touches...remind me about flower beds being trashed...remind me about being out of town for days at a time....remind me about not feeling so good and still needing to go out there and take care of them and gather eggs....
