Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I
We are all just happily watching our chicks!
In full transparency I don’t use an MHP, i bought a heat plate - but the same principles apply, and it was this thread that convinced me to get the plate rather than use a lamp.
I do make a cave out of my plate using a little blanket.
My babies are two weeks old and are now out in the coop. Inside at 70f they were sleeping mostly outside the cave. Now they are outside with lows in the low 40s they are going in it fully at night.
I think the mhp was the inspiration for a lot of people buying brooder plates.
Congratulations on the new chicks!

I've sent links for this thread to so many non-bycers. I'll bet you get some questions soon.

Anytime I can turn off one more heat lamp, I’m happy!

I think so too. Ironic when the reason I went with MHP in the first place was because a commercial heat plate just wasn’t in the budget!
I have my MHP and think it's a great way to brood chicks. I've been blessed with broody hen volunteers for my hatches the past few years. Can't argue if a hen wants to do all the work for me!
I’d never argue with a good broody - if her timing ever coincided with mine! MHP is the closest duplication there could be.

My goodness…..here it is chick season and this thread is as quiet as can be. Usually this is the time of year when the questions start rolling in! I miss that!

@galaga6846 Yours should be here by now…how’d they do?
Our feed store chick schedule has not coincided with our schedule. I am hoping today they get the shipment we want. Some nice, blue/green/chocolate/pink layers. The MHP is ready. As is the outdoor brooder. Just need to get in line in time to get the chicks we want.

What feed store are you going to? I will be doing this next week with trying to get there in time to get the chicks that I want.

Ventura Grain in Taunton, MA. They are great. The store always has some of the employee's dogs. And they welcome our dog.
Ok that is what I thought. That is where I am going next week. Thought of it this week but my daughter wants a Sicilian Buttercup and they don't have them this week. You did see they changed how they are doing it this year right? People aren't lining up at 6am any more.....

And off topic where did you grow up? I grew up with a J Reardon. Lol

Thats so cool!
I don't know a thing about that store, but we have a similar local feed store in our area that I love. They treat the chicks so much better than TSC, they aways look happy and clean.

They did so well! The heating pad was perfect. After two weeks they didn't use the heat anymore. They are 4 weeks old and only have downy feathers around their faces. Huge pullets.
