Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

people have put straw or something inside so the chicks are closer to the HP if you can not smouch it down.. they will need the height in a couple of days

What a great idea. Straw is acceptable bedding as well once these little boogers hit the garage in a few weeks? For five chicks I'm assuming one Bale will last me a while...dry and cool storage and it should last for a while shouldn't it? Thank you for the idea!

HELLO!
I am so happy that my heating pad idea has taken off and many people are giving baby chicks a happier more natural life! I only just found out that this idea of mine took off from one of your members who saw my youtube video that I posted two years ago. I hope to learn and share more on this site! Here is the original video. Sunbeam pads have evolved a bit.. Mine was a simple king size with no auto shutoff feature. The chicks were outdoors in my other invention; a mobile solar chicken house. The chicks could go in and out whenever they wanted and there was pleanty of roam to run and play on green grass inside. Take a peek!

Many welcomes and Thank yous!

I watched the video. Wonderful idea! I have mine under a lamp at the moment. When payday comes im getting a heating pad:)
Happy Chickens!

Again, not my idea!! Lol...credit where credit is due!

I WAS waiting to do MHP ordering heating pad from Amazon. You know how long they take if you don't have Prime. Well, I realized I already HAD a heating pad kicking around (using it for castor oil packs, fabulous) and I instantly repurposed it ( a bit smaller ) for use indoor, worked perfect...look for heating pads at goodwill or similar, don't wait!! I didn't!!

Automatic doors..... Worth it or not? Go

For me?? Absolutely.

I'm sure it depends on the individual situation. My coop is a converted horse stall in the lower shed part of an OLD bank barn. The rest of the shed part is their "indoor run". The coop is predator proof but there is nothing to keep a digging predator from getting into the "run" if it wanted to. Haven't had that problem (knock on wood I won't). We bought the house believing that it was in good shape (for its age) since the prior owners had rehabbed the north building (2 pre Civil War war buildings joined sometime prior to 1900).

Well "rehabbed" also meant HID THE MAJOR ROT and lied about it on the listing. We had to move out while that part, in the end, was 90% rebuilt over 6 months. I had the chickens down in the barn and we were living 25 miles away. My wife had to come up every morning to let the girls out of the coop into the "run". I would come over after work, also 25 miles away and let the girls out of the barn for a couple of hours.

I got a PulletShut door after about a month of that. I still came after work but my wife didn't have to drive 50 miles round trip to let them out. Since there was no power in the barn during the reconstruction of the house and I wasn't sure if there would be enough sun to charge the battery, I connected two used 6V lantern batteries in series to make 12V. The first set lasted about 6 months (through the summer) then I put in the second set of used batteries. When they had been in ~6 months I figured they were not going to last too much longer and got two more regular ones at WallyWorld. When they had been in about a year I again figured they were about done and got two Alkaline ones. That was Nov 2014. I figured they would be about done about the same time in 2015 and bought two more. Nope, they are still working. That door uses almost NO power. The solar charger would have been more than fine. I also added the photo cell controller after about a year. Should have done that at the start, it is cheap and having to reprogram the door as the hours of daylight changes is a PITA (and would be with most any door).

Now I don't have to go down to the barn to let the girls out of the coop in the morning and if they are locked in the barn while we go somewhere and don't get back until after dark, they are safely locked in the coop when we get home. They naturally go to the coop as the light gets flat but the photo sensor is outside the barn so the door doesn't close until it is pretty dark and the girls are up for the night.

FF feeder??
Picture/directions please!

You can repurpose this design to fit any square/rectangular plastic or ceramic dish, i would think!! Babies gobbling this stuff up!! i just bent the hardware cloth around the edges so it fit INSIDE the dish! No poky edges...so now they can't step in and glop it all over the place, and it doesn't spill even if turned over...FF is thick enough...and I don't remove the wire...just spoon the FF over it...and it descends to bottom...
