Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

You need to start setting the eggs that are more round. Theory says they are more likely females. LazyGardner is doing experiment #2 on that.

With CLB"s I set every egg. I can not get enough chicks, I have a waiting list for them, currently I am 6 weeks behind on orders for them... If I have extra roosters after chick season ends, I will raise them and make Cream Chicken soup.

Actually, I'm doing my second season, but my 4th hatch of this experiment! I have 27 eggs from my flock set which are gender selected. I also have 25 eggs total from 2 different shipments. What on earth was I thinking? My flock is too big already. I hope there are a lot of folks in my area who need birds this season!!!

and how is this experiment working out so far, if I may ask?

This was my original thread. Of 3 hatches last season, my gender selected pullet rate was 60% compared to previous random hatches which were 40%. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/958517/nutrition-and-gender-and-inducing-broodiness. Other folks are trialing this method and some are having pretty awesome results. I posted a survey to try to compile data in one location. I'm encouraging folks to enter their results, including the poor results. The thread for that survey can be found at the bottom of my signature line. It's worth trying, especially if you have access to your own eggs, and particularly, if you have a smaller flock with members who lay distinctive eggs, so you can divide your week's worth of eggs, to separate all of Ruby's, Esmerelda's, and Geraldine's eggs into individual piles, and then select the most likely "female shaped eggs" from each pile to incubate.

this discussion of gender selection via egg shape is fascinating, I think I will try it when the broodies start going.

How many chicks can you brood with a 12x24 sunbeam heating pad (does have off switch, but only 3 or 4 settings) ?

I have 25 red rangers coming - raising them for meat - and I'm wondering if I will have enough space in the brooder - have a 12x24 heating pad and a small brinsea brooder. Will that be enough for 25 chicks? Not getting them til June, which is nice warm weather here .

I have to say, while I think the experiment is interesting, I am a real doubting Thomas on this.

You will have lots of room for the first week or so, probably longer as they will just start sitting on top of the pads or in front of it.

BTW Ole's (RIP) is a grandpa many times over!

Me too.

I've got 16 two to four day olds under a 12 x 24 right now and there's plenty of room.....the back is open for egress.
