Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Jaslyman: Yep, I know exactly what kind of chicks those are! They are cute! Seriously... If you can find out what hatchery they came from, then go to that hatchery's web site, they may have some actual photos of the breeds of chicks they carry. I know Murray McMurray does. If you can't get good photos from the hatchery they came from, then check M Mc.

so they seem to be coming in and out pretty much on their own with the exception of one of the Easter Eggers. I can already tell the Barred Rock is going to be the leader of the pack she seems to have things kind of figured out. Figures She's Mine . I have the heating pad set on high, it does not have number Heating the idea was to put them out into the garage and not keep them in the house. The next set up for the brooder is a dish drainer. I kind of wondered about the heat because if you actually set a thermometer on the pad it is closer to 110 hundred and fifteen. Maybe I should just go ahead with the taller drainer?
I have mine in the basement 63 f, I had to put the heating pad to medium the first day.. High was too warm

redufresne,

sounds like a very stuffed crop to me.  Check first thing in the morning, the crop will be pretty empty by then.  If the bulge is gone in the morning, then you are seeing the crop!   when the skin is stretched with a full crop in a chick, the feathers seem more scanty....

Thank you. Yes, better in morning, bulging again in evening. Gave him some olive oil and made him drink extra water. We shall see.

That's pretty normal....is it pooping ok?

I think so (there are six chicks). He came with pasty butt, so he's the one I am constantly checking. His butt looks fine, except for those weird probably male feathers that are starting to grow. He's certainly feisty and eating and running about with the other young chickens. Doesn't seem distressed, other than when I'm messin' with him, LOL. He just looks so different from the others with that bulging crop. The other austrolorp is shy and skittish and won't even eat dried meal worms from me! When I need more chicks, I'll stick to the orpingtins or reds as they seem much hardier.
