Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

This is probably the most viable choice....as it's available by the foot on amazon.
I have searched for this stuff before and never found one available to the 'layman'.
Great info on the product too.
It's funny, I used to work in an extrusion plant that made this stuff, we called it 'pinch welt'.

The others seem to be industrial sources that usually only deal in large quantities to industrial customers.

Glass shops might have it.

Sorry I'm late to chime in after posting all that stuff - things have been crazy at work, but I wanted to belatedly comment that I had/have scrap welded wire fencing around in the yard, which is why I used it, so I like the repurposed tomato cage or other repurposed option - I had just wanted to emphasize that HW cloth alonewasn't going to cut it, support wise (since I had tried that and it failed). With patience and creativity, I bet someone could use several wire hangers and a pair of pliers for a frame. Just the sorts of things I think about while waiting for the elevator during the day.

@casportpony - awesome links for edging - I have a lot of different stuff I need that for (I have flashing that I want to use for some projects and it is so sharp!). Thanks for digging up those links!

You're funny... I think about stuff like that when I'm driving or out feeding animals. BTW, it as your pictures of the clear tubing that made me think of the edging. :D

Oh, forgive me.....but I can't help giggling a little bit. I guess I'm just simple minded enough to prefer keeping it all as simple as I can and I can't imagine doing all this extra stuff. Just grab my bit of fencing out of the chick storage box, bungee the pad inside it, put the towel over it, and plug it in. If I had a lot of chicks - more than the top count of 17 I had once - I'd use two pads as @Fire Ant Farm , and change the orientation of the cave so they went in and out the elongated side. I know, I'm a baad girl.

For me I think it would be easier to put edge trim on than tape, but maybe that's because I worked in high tech for so long and got used to finding these types of solutions?

Could be. I ain't tech smart and not always the brightest crayon in the box, although I am certifiably lazy.

All I know is that I've had the same pieces of electrical tape covering the pokey-outies since I raised my first batch of 5 chicks this way, and aside from replacing one or two bits that got a tad unwound, or putting another piece on to stick the loose ends down, those pieces are still on there. I'm sure the type of fencing makes a difference, too. I used welded wire and the only pokey-outies I had were from cutting a hunk of it off the partial roll we had stashed behind the garage. A finer mesh or more edges would probably make a different kind of covering necessary. I should add that this was taken when I first started using MHP and was draping the pad over the outside, which I no longer do.

Nope - it's just that when I duct taped it, I put on two layers of tape, and then proceeded to slice open my thumb THROUGH the tape (maybe my cuts were particularly sharp?). It scared me about the chicks. So I used LOTS of extra layers for that one, but that's when I started looking for another edging option for new ones I was building.

Hey, if I'd have cut my thumb like that I'd probably have chickened out (pun intended) and still been using a heat lamp!!

So get thee out from under the chair, my friend!
