The white stripes can only be that thick in males as they can have two copies of that gene while females can only have one.

Well shoot. Now I can notice how much darker the other barred rock is. I wasn't planning to keep any roos but this one is one of the more friendly chicks.

That’s a pretty common trap we fall into. Even at a very young age males tend to be bolder and more curious than females, traits that one day could make them a good flock master. But that gives them personality so naturally we are drawn to them.

Females can have those traits also at that age but males tend to have it a lot more. That doesn’t mean the females will not be really friendly once you socialize them.

As I understand it, it's true for the white barring found in barred rocks, dominiques, cuckoo marans, and others.

Does anyone have experience with isa Browns too? I have 2 and they look very different from each other at 3 1/2 weeks. Makes me wonder if I have one of each of those too

Where did you get the eggs and do you know the parents of the eggs?

ISA Browns are hybrids. If you are hatching eggs from your ISA browns crossed with your rooster they will not breed true.

I don't have ISAs, but I have another sex-link and quite a few of them look different in feathering from each other, but they are all pullets. Since they are technically a mixed breed, I figured it was what came out of the genetic do-si-do.

I got them at a tractor supply store. They were both tan as chicks. I was told that was a how they tell if they are pullets. But I dont have any experience to know
