Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So our chicks are on day 7 and 8 now and feathering out fast. They have been on FF since day three and they are loving life. Since day two outside they put themselves away at night. Also yesterday we had a rainstorm and they were smart enough to to get into their kennel which has a roof and not out in their brooder area which is partially uncovered. Took a few pics today if them enjoying their grass.

Only 8 out of the originals left in the incubator, and they ain't doing nuffin'!! What good are eggs if they don't do anything cute, for goodness sake?? Today is Day 20. <Sigh> Oh, I should add that MHP is ready and the brooder is set up out in the run.

Thanks and yes they love the grass, keeps them busy for awhile. Those are two Olive Eggers and one Easter Egger. One Olive Egger is the darker chipmunk stripped looking one and the other one is the one with blue body and brown head. The lightest colored chick with chipmunk strips and is more buffish in color is the EE.

hatching is hard stuff for us humans let alone the chicks! Don't give up the faith, I bet you have a pip tomorrow. Usually how it goes... I am rooting for you. I lost so many, I know what that feeling is like, I was toying with hatching more this year and then decided why did I want to put myself through the stress all over again. Next year!

I have a temperature question. Pardon our newbieness. I have the MHP on another test run in the brooder box. Our digital thermometer says it's 87 under there with the heating pad on 6. The temp probe is just laying on the shavings on the floor. Is that the correct setting for the heating pad to start or is that too warm? Picking up our 12 chicks tomorrow!!

Should be ok at that temp if the chicks are q few days old. Also remember the temperature in the MHP will rise when the warm little chick bodies all are underneath it. Most important way to tell is watch the chicks behaviors. If they don't spend anytime under the heat pad or all their time on top it might be too warm.

Thanks for the reply. Makes sense. We're first timers and a little nervous. We both work during the day so we are picking up the chicks after work tomorrow and then we're right back to work on Wednesday morning so not much time to observe. Trying to make sure all is well for the little ones.
